Position Overview:


The Chief Operations Officer (COO) plays a pivotal role in supporting the strategic objectives of the University, reporting directly to the President and collaborating closely with the executive leadership team. The COO is responsible for overseeing the essential infrastructure that supports the University’s mission in education, research, and community engagement, including facilities, technology, and human resources.

In partnership with the Chief Financial Officer, Provost, Deans, and other senior leaders, the COO will develop and implement a range of strategic and operational initiatives that align Facilities Services, Information Technology Services (ITS), and Human Resources with the University’s overarching goals.

With a commitment to exceptional service delivery, the COO will establish effective business practices that optimize the use of the University’s resources and contribute to long-term planning and cultural development.

Some departments on campus operate with unique space, IT, and HR functions, necessitating a collaborative approach to ensure effective service across the University.

The COO will engage with members of the Board of Trustees, providing oversight and support for relevant committees.

The COO will directly supervise the Associate Vice President for Facilities Services, the Chief Human Resources Officer, and the Chief Information Officer.


Facilities Management:

The University of Chicago's expansive campus encompasses 170 buildings across 217 acres, featuring a diverse range of architectural styles and functionalities, including historic structures, academic facilities, and residential halls.

The COO’s responsibilities in facilities management include overseeing capital planning, campus architecture, master planning, and the quality of the campus environment.

Additional duties involve managing central administration facilities and collaborating with auxiliary entities to enhance academic space planning.

Approximately 300 personnel in Facilities Services are dedicated to maintaining the integrity and viability of the campus through effective project delivery, operations, and sustainability initiatives.


Information Technology Services:

The COO oversees the central Information Technology Services (ITS) organization, which is responsible for ensuring innovation, security, and reliability in technology systems that support the University’s academic and administrative functions.

ITS employs around 300 staff members focused on IT architecture, enterprise applications, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies.


Human Resources Oversight:

The COO also provides strategic oversight for the University’s central human resources functions, which encompass recruitment, benefits, performance management, and employee relations.

A team of approximately 40 HR professionals supports these initiatives.


Key Responsibilities:


- Oversee compliance, financial performance, and workforce management in Human Resources, ITS, and Facilities Services.

- Lead various institutional strategic projects in collaboration with University leaders to ensure successful implementation of initiatives.

- Support real estate development and capital investment activities, ensuring quality and financial viability.

- Facilitate robust planning in finance and risk assessment for HR, ITS, and the built environment.

- Collaborate with the Office of the Provost and the Office of the CFO on operating and capital project processes.

- Engage with the broader community to foster partnerships and collaborative projects.

- Support Board of Trustee committees and governance matters.

- Convene and lead committees and working groups as necessary.


Qualifications:


- Proven ability to inspire trust and confidence among stakeholders.

- Strong project management skills with a track record of meeting deadlines.

- Excellent financial acumen and the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively.

- Experience in managing complex interdependencies and competing priorities.

- Strong writing and communication skills, particularly in producing executive-level materials.

Education and Experience:

- Bachelor’s degree in a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.

- At least 10 years of experience in leading administrative functions within a large institution.

- Proven success as a strategic advisor to executive leadership.

- Experience managing complex budgets and projects.

- Expertise in areas such as facilities management, human resources, or information technology.

- Experience in overseeing operations in a complex environment.
