Job Summary

The Town of Ashland is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Water Technician III to join our team in the Water/Sewer Division within the Department of Public Works. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for operating essential water and sewer equipment, performing maintenance and repairs to the water distribution system and sewer collection system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain water and sewer equipment, including pumps, generators, and vehicles.
  • Perform water meter installations, inspections, and maintenance.
  • Inspect and maintain pump stations, generators, and vehicles.
  • Efficiently and accurately perform dig safe mark-outs.
  • Read and interpret engineering blueprints and specifications.
  • Maintain and record daily activity.
  • Perform hydrant replacement, maintenance, and flushing.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) on a daily basis.
  • Ensure safe work zones on digs to promote a safe work environment.
  • Be available for call-out at any time for emergency repairs or snow removal activities.
  • May be required to act as a foreman when necessary.
  • Participate in training related to pumps, valves, electrical systems, SCADA, generators, and other key components and equipment.
  • Perform cross connection surveys, tests, and inspections of commercial, industrial, agricultural, institutional, and municipal facilities.
  • Test backflow prevention devices in conformance with local regulations.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Seven (7) years' experience in public works and/or construction industry.
  • Computer skills for recording and research.
Licenses and Certifications
  • CDL Class B with Air Brake Endorsement.
  • Hoisting 2A/1C and 4G.
  • Tanker Endorsement.
  • Massachusetts Water Distribution II Certificate.
  • Backflow Technician (preferred).
  • Mass DEP Backflow Surveyor Tester Inspection License (preferred).
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of public works, including water and sewer operations, distribution, and collection systems.
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to efficiently and competently operate a backhoe/excavator and Vac truck.
  • Knowledge of valves, pipes, gates, hydrants, pumps, generators, SCADA, electronics, and motors related to water and sewer systems.
  • Strong knowledge and experience maintaining water and sewer pump stations.
  • Ability to efficiently use electronic devices for work orders.
  • Displays leadership qualities.
