Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Radiation Safety Specialist to join our team at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services. As a Radiation Safety Specialist, you will be responsible for conducting independent inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with radiation safety regulations and standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct independent inspections and investigations to determine compliance with radiation safety regulations and standards.
  • Prepare and submit complex compliance and inspection activity reports to the Radiation Operations Branch for review and evaluation.
  • Provide technical consultation and training to staff, other state and federal agencies, and the public on radiation safety and health physics topics.
  • Participate as a member of the Radiological Emergency Response Team during exercises and actual emergency responses.
  • Perform health physics activities and compliance duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of radiation safety regulations and standards, including the Texas Administrative Code and federal regulations.
  • Experience in conducting independent inspections and investigations, preparing reports, and providing technical consultation and training.
  • Ability to interpret laws and regulations, communicate technical information, and detect and evaluate radiation and public health hazards.
  • Ability to use proper inspection procedures and logic pathways to determine compliance status of licensees and industrial registrants.
  • Knowledge of function and operational characteristics of exposure devices, gauges/test equipment, and radiation producing devices commonly utilized by industrial and medical licensees and registrants.
Work Environment:

The Radiation Safety Specialist will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent travel to radiological incidents and emergencies. The position requires the ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The Radiation Safety Specialist will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow radiation safety protocols when working with radiation sources.

Education and Experience:

A bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as health physics, nuclear engineering, or a related field, is required. A master's degree or Ph.D. is preferred. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in radiation safety, health physics, or a related field.
