Position Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Senior Radiation Therapy Specialist plays a pivotal role in the planning, administration, and oversight of patient treatments. This role involves delivering radiation therapy while being an integral part of the radiation oncology team, ensuring comprehensive care for patients. The Senior Radiation Therapy Specialist serves as a key liaison between physicians and support staff, demonstrating proficiency in various radiation therapy techniques and mentoring junior therapists and students to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Core Responsibilities

Patient Care and Treatment
  • Administers radiation therapy treatments accurately and safely, adhering to protocols established by the Radiation Oncologist.
  • Conducts simulation operations, selecting and creating necessary immobilization devices and positioning aids.
  • Provides clear explanations and instructions to patients, assessing their condition and addressing any side effects daily.
Team Collaboration
  • Facilitates effective communication among the healthcare team to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Mentors and guides Radiation Therapists and students, fostering a supportive and engaging work environment.
  • Actively participates in team discussions to share relevant patient information and enhance collaborative efforts.
Quality and Safety Standards
  • Implements radiation safety protocols to protect patients, self, and colleagues, maintaining compliance with established guidelines.
  • Conducts regular equipment checks and ensures all procedures are documented accurately to uphold quality standards.
  • Identifies and reports any equipment malfunctions promptly to maintain operational efficiency.
Professional Development
  • Engages in continuous learning opportunities to enhance professional competencies and contribute to departmental initiatives.
  • Participates in quality improvement projects aimed at elevating service delivery and patient outcomes.

Qualifications

Education
  • Completion of an accredited educational program recognized by the relevant credentialing body.
Experience
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a licensed Radiologic Technologist.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Certification as a Medical Radiologic Technologist and state licensure as required.
  • ARRT certification in Radiation Therapy or Radiography.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrates proficiency in performing assigned duties with ongoing assessments of skills and competencies.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Basic computer skills for managing patient information and documentation.
