Job Summary

As a Volunteer Long-Term Care Ombudsman, you will play a crucial role in advocating for the rights and well-being of residents in long-term care facilities. This volunteer position is both rewarding and impactful, allowing you to make a positive change in the lives of those who need it the most.

Responsibilities
  1. Visit with residents living in assigned long-term care facilities at least weekly, with more frequent visits desirable.
  2. Provide individual information to residents about their rights, community services, laws, regulations, and standards governing long-term care facilities.
  3. Investigate complaints and determine facts of alleged violations.
  4. Work with residents and service providers to resolve complaints.
  5. Refer unresolved complaints to the Regional Long-Term Care Ombuds and regulatory agencies as necessary.
  6. Assist residents and their families in becoming more actively involved in care and treatment.
  7. Attend monthly in-service training sessions and submit monthly activity reports.
Requirements
  • Volunteer candidates must be at least 18 years old with reliable transportation.
  • A sincere interest in promoting the well-being and protecting the rights of people in long-term care.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with residents, Regional Long-Term Care Ombuds, and long-term care providers.
  • Acceptance of and adherence to the Volunteer Ombuds Code of Ethics and Standards.
  • Successful completion of the Washington State Long-Term Care Volunteer Ombudsman Programs Training and State Ombuds Certification.
  • Commitment to provide at least four hours per week of volunteer ombuds service per year.
