Position Summary

AAI is seeking a dedicated Ambulatory Procedure Visit Medical Coding Specialist responsible for the precise assignment of Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD diagnoses, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes. This role involves interpreting medical record documentation to ensure accurate coding for ambulatory procedure visits.

Key Responsibilities
  • Utilize strong computer and communication skills to interact effectively with providers and staff.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, medical terminology, and coding guidelines relevant to outpatient and ambulatory surgery.
  • Manage multiple projects efficiently while prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Assign diagnosis and procedure codes accurately for various services, ensuring compliance with DHA standards.
  • Adhere to accepted coding practices and guidelines to ensure ethical and accurate coding.
  • Stay updated on regulatory changes affecting coded information.
  • Engage in continuous education and training to maintain technical proficiency.
  • Review documentation for inconsistencies and provide feedback to enhance coding accuracy.
  • Act as a resource for medical staff regarding coding inquiries and provide training opportunities.
  • Support DHA coding compliance through diligent research and adherence to guidelines.
  • Contribute to periodic reporting as required by DHA instructions.
QualificationsEducation

Candidates must possess post-secondary education or training in one of the following:

  • An Associate's degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
  • A university certificate in medical coding.
  • At least 30 semester hours of relevant coursework.
  • Completion of an AAPC or AHIMA coding certification preparation course.
  • Successful completion of a training course beyond apprentice level in a medical-related field.
Experience

Candidates must have experience in at least one of the following:

  • A minimum of four years of medical coding and/or auditing experience across multiple specialties.
  • A minimum of two years of medical coding or auditing experience in a Military Treatment Facility.
Certifications

Candidates are required to hold one current coding certification from each of the following categories:

  • Professional Services Coding Certification (e.g., RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CCS-P)
  • Institutional (Facility) Coding Certifications (e.g., RHIT, RHIA, COC, CCS)
Additional Skills
  • Advanced knowledge of ICD-CM, HCPCS, and CPT coding systems.
  • Understanding of reimbursement systems and coding compliance regulations.
  • Familiarity with clinical documentation improvement processes.
