Ambulatory Procedure Visit Medical Coder (Coder III) at AAI

Job Description

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assign accurate Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD diagnoses, current procedural terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) for ambulatory procedure visits.
  • Utilize medical record documentation (paper or electronic) to derive codes and quantities.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of anatomy/physiology, disease processes, medical terminology, coding guidelines, documentation requirements, and reimbursement systems.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-CM), and Procedural Coding System (PCS), as well as Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).
  • Stay up-to-date with industry nomenclature, medical and procedural terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and disease processes.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure accurate and efficient coding practices.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of medical coding and/or auditing experience in two (2) or more medical, surgical, and ancillary specialties within the past 10 years.
  • Advanced knowledge of reimbursement systems, including Prospective Payment System (PPS) and Diagnostic Related Groupings (DRGs); Ambulatory Payment Classifications (APCs); and Resource-Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS).
  • Practical knowledge of medical specialties, medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ancillary services, and revenue cycle management concepts related to medical coding.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

Education and Certifications:

  • Associate's degree or higher in Health Information Management or Healthcare Administration, healthcare-related major, or biological science.
  • University certificate in medical coding or successful completion of an American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) coding certification preparation course.
