Role Summary

AAI is seeking a skilled Inpatient Medical Coder responsible for the precise assignment of Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD diagnoses, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) modifiers. This role involves thorough documentation review from medical records, whether in paper or electronic format, specifically for inpatient procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate proficiency in coding and documentation standards.
  • Utilize strong computer and communication skills to collaborate effectively with healthcare providers and staff.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and coding guidelines relevant to inpatient services.
  • Manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines efficiently.
Qualifications

Education/Certification:
Preferred certifications include Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Coder Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coder Specialist – Physician (CCS-P). Candidates should possess a minimum of five years of coding or auditing experience across various medical specialties within the last decade, or three years if experience is in a Military Treatment Facility (MTF).

Continuing Education Requirements

Candidates must have post-secondary education or training in one of the following areas:
• An Associate's degree or higher in Health Information Management or a related field.
• A university certificate in medical coding.
• At least 30 semester hours of relevant coursework, including anatomy and medical terminology.
• Completion of a coding certification preparation course from AAPC or AHIMA.

Experience

• A minimum of five years of coding and/or auditing experience in diverse medical specialties.
• Advanced knowledge of ICD-CM, PCS, HCPCS, and CPT coding systems.
• Familiarity with reimbursement systems such as PPS, DRGs, and APCs.

Unique Military Healthcare Systems/Procedures

• Knowledge of MHS GENESIS and other military electronic medical record systems.
• Understanding of the military filing system and medical record tracking procedures.
