Cathode Technology Lead Job Description

Tesla's Cathode Advanced Manufacturing team is driving innovation in the production of novel cathode and precursor materials for battery electric vehicles.

The Cathode Technology Lead will collaborate with the team to develop and scale the production of cathode materials, ensuring seamless transfer of pilot operations to production operations in Austin, TX.

This role requires a strong understanding of the cathode production process, including LiTM mixing, calcination, washing, coating, and quality control.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with Tesla R&D and Pilot Plant leadership to set a roadmap for testing and development of current and future cathode recipes and advancements.
  • Collaborate with Tesla Cathode Manufacturing commissioning teams on full-scale start-up challenges and build a roadmap for continued advancement.
  • Develop and drive a technology risk assessment across all scales of cathode manufacturing, identifying high-risk areas and implementing proper mitigations.
  • Track and document progress of operations/material qualification to prescribed schedules.
  • Observe and record process and product data, refining the art of cathode processing and building a knowledge base to inform the next generation of cathode processing plants.
  • Develop a detailed layout to capture and implement learning from the production line commissioning and qualification phase to ensure sustainable cathode manufacturing.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Ceramics Engineering, or similar.
  • 5+ years of experience in a Cathode (CAM) manufacturing environment in a mix of full-scale, pilot, and R&D.
  • A strong understanding of cathode fundamentals, including LiTM mixing, calcination, washing, coating, and quality control.
  • Experience leading diverse technical teams and demonstrating product performance.
  • Program management experience is a plus.
