Job Summary

Oklahoma State University is seeking a highly skilled Academic Advisor to provide academic guidance and career support to students within an assigned area of focus. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty and staff to ensure students receive the support they need to navigate their educational journey.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Academic Advisement

Provide academic advising to degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students, helping them develop strategies for timely completion of degree requirements and achieving academic and career success.

Policy Interpretation and Communication

Interpret federal, state, and institutional policies, and communicate these to faculty, students, and staff in a professional and clear manner. Maintain a current understanding of academic policies, procedures, and processes, including those related to accreditations and certifications.

Schedule Development and Registration

Assist students with schedule development and course registration, including drop, add, and withdrawal processes. Educate students on how to follow a degree plan and utilize online enrollment systems.

Transfer and Career Guidance

Advise students planning to transfer to other colleges and universities on issues related to course transfer, degree options, and long-term career goals.

Transcript Evaluation and Database Maintenance

Evaluate transcripts from other academic institutions for equivalencies and apply them to degree programs. Work with faculty and Registrar Services to maintain a database of transfer course equivalencies.

Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy

Advise students in relation to the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP), preparing and monitoring student educational plans in compliance with institutional and federal regulations.

Campus Resource Awareness

Increase student awareness of campus resources and programs that enhance the student experience, making referrals to off-campus community resources as needed.

Liaison and Retention Strategies

Serve as a liaison between the academic advisement team and other functional areas of campus, disseminating information regarding assigned specialty/area of focus as needed. Assist with campus-wide persistence and graduation efforts, planning and implementing retention strategies targeting students within an assigned specialty/area of focus.

Recruitment and Student Engagement

Assist with recruitment and student engagement efforts, delivering presentations and distributing information to current and prospective students as needed.

Degree Completion and Confidentiality

Promote degree completion and assist students with degree audits, My Academic Plans (MAPs), and graduation applications. Maintain confidentiality of student records and observe policies related to student privacy (FERPA).

Professional Development and Documentation

Participate in Advisement Team meetings/trainings, campus committees, and ongoing professional development opportunities. Participate in departmental documentation and process improvement efforts, exhibiting an understanding of this position's role in campus semester plans, standard operating procedures, key performance indicators, etc.

Mandatory Training and Development

Complete all mandatory training and participate in a minimum of two professional development opportunities each year.
