Position Overview:
Under limited supervision, the Research Animal Care Technician II is responsible for delivering clinical support to laboratory animals.

This role encompasses all facets of the health and welfare of research animals, including daily assessments and treatments, maintaining precise health documentation, and providing requested technical services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute veterinary procedures such as blood collection, administration of materials (both parenteral and oral), animal restraint, anesthesia, and tissue collection.
  • Identify and communicate health issues to veterinarians effectively, both verbally and in writing, while comprehending instructions from veterinarians and supervisors.
  • Conduct daily observational rounds and health assessments.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal treatments in both written and electronic formats.
  • Foster effective communication and working relationships with the animal care staff, veterinarians, and research personnel.
  • Participate in weekend and holiday rotations, as well as during emergencies, to ensure consistent care for research animals.
  • Assist researchers with appropriate anesthetics and treatments, and provide education on handling, rodent anesthesia, post-operative monitoring, and aseptic techniques.
  • Deliver comprehensive pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative care, including but not limited to: animal transport, administration of anesthesia and analgesia, intubation, and bandaging as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Independently perform routine surgical procedures on rodents under veterinarian oversight.
  • Contribute to the management and upkeep of veterinary drugs and supplies, including cleaning, preparing, packing, and sterilizing surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Document the use of controlled substances accurately and participate in inventory checks to ensure that all drugs and supplies are current and available.
  • Engage in specific technical services as required by the veterinary team.
  • Maintain veterinary technical equipment in optimal working condition.
  • Provide training and mentorship to entry-level veterinary technicians.
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
The position operates primarily in a standard vivarium environment, which includes typical environmental hazards associated with laboratory settings. Safety shoes are mandatory for all personnel working in animal facilities.
Physical Requirements:
  • Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking, and walking.
  • Seldom: Lifting up to 50 pounds, kneeling, and squatting.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED is required, along with four years of relevant experience or an Associate's Degree in a related field (one year of education can substitute for two years of related work experience). LAT or CVT certification must be obtained within one year of employment.
