Role Summary

The Middle School Counselor is tasked with delivering mental health services to students, focusing on those facing academic challenges, social/mental health issues, or special education needs. This role involves collaborating with school staff to enhance the mental health framework of the institution and support overall student achievement. A strong understanding of social-emotional well-being and culturally responsive practices is essential when working with a diverse student body. Confidentiality and adherence to state and federal regulations, as well as organizational policies, are paramount.

Key Responsibilities:

Support for School Community:

  • Devote approximately 80% of time to direct student services through preventive and culturally responsive methods, with the remaining time allocated to program development and management.
  • Conduct regular individual and group counseling sessions for students and their families.
  • Provide crisis intervention as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of student interactions and counseling schedules.
  • Set and monitor goals with students to ensure progress.
  • Assist students in achieving high school graduation, college enrollment, and personal independence.
  • Engage in daily collaboration with supervisors, colleagues, and educators to address student needs.
  • Develop a comprehensive plan for the effective delivery of counseling services aligned with annual student achievement objectives.

  • Participate in staff meetings and maintain open communication with colleagues.

  • Ensure a safe and supportive environment during counseling sessions.
  • Promote and uphold school values and policies.
  • Support school leadership in addressing disciplinary matters.
  • Work with administration to create comprehensive support systems for students exhibiting challenging behaviors.

Preventative and Responsive Services:

  • Design and implement a guidance curriculum.
  • Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions addressing academic, social, and personal concerns.
  • Consult with families and staff to assess student needs and recommend educational options.
  • Plan and deliver classroom guidance sessions focused on academic achievement, career development, and personal growth.
  • Assess student needs and refer them to appropriate resources.
  • Intervene in crisis situations and participate in crisis management teams.
  • Prepare students for transitions to high school and beyond.
  • Coordinate programs such as career fairs and attendance celebrations to enhance student awareness of post-secondary opportunities.
  • Assist students in navigating their academic and community experiences through individualized planning.

Family Engagement:

  • Establish effective communication with parents and provide regular updates on student progress.
  • Be present at school events involving families.
  • Assist families in accessing services for their children through referrals and follow-ups.
  • Provide outreach and education on mental health and substance abuse to students, families, and community members.
  • Be accessible to students, parents, and staff.
  • Design and implement family engagement activities, including workshops and professional development sessions.

Professional Development:

  • Pursue challenging professional goals annually.
  • Be open to feedback and support from colleagues to foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities throughout the academic year.
  • Participate in required training as mandated by school administration.

Accountability:

  • Conduct annual program audits to evaluate the effectiveness of counseling services.
  • Prepare and submit various reports to meet program requirements.
  • Utilize data to identify students in need of services.
  • Interpret assessment results to develop academic plans for students.
  • May oversee counseling interns as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Credential for providing ERMHS services, such as a Pupil Personnel Service (PPS) credential, either completed or in progress.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Understanding of ACSA Counseling standards.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficient in Google Classrooms and other relevant software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in low-income educational settings.
  • At least two years of counseling experience or extensive work in urban schools.
  • Experience in charter schools is preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods and work on a computer.
  • Proficient in motor coordination and dexterity for tasks such as typing.
  • Occasional physical effort may be required.
  • Ability to navigate various departments within the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.
