Role Summary

The Middle School Counselor is tasked with delivering essential mental health services to designated students, including those facing academic challenges, social/mental health issues, and students with special needs. This role involves providing consultation to school staff to enhance the overall mental health objectives of the institution and contribute to student success. A deep understanding of the significance of social-emotional well-being for students and the ability to employ culturally responsive strategies when engaging with a diverse student body is crucial. The counselor must uphold professional standards and maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations, as well as AMPS policies.

Key Responsibilities:

Support for School Community:

  • Allocate approximately 80% of time to deliver direct services to students through preventive and culturally responsive methods, including personalized student planning, while dedicating the remaining time to program development and management.
  • Conduct regular individual and group counseling sessions for students and their families.
  • Provide crisis intervention as necessary.
  • Manage, track, and document student interactions and counseling schedules.
  • Collaborate with students to establish goals and monitor their progress.
  • Assist students in achieving high school graduation, college enrollment, and self-sufficiency.
  • Engage in daily collaboration and communication with supervisors, colleagues, and educators to address student needs.
  • Develop and maintain a structured plan for effective delivery of counseling programs aligned with AMPS annual student achievement objectives.

Commitment to School Culture:

  • Collaborate effectively with the school team and across AMPS.
  • Provide in-service training on topics pertinent to the counseling program and student achievement.
  • Contribute to the development of a school-wide culture that meets the needs of students, educators, and families.
  • Participate in all staff meetings and maintain open communication with colleagues.
  • Build positive relationships with students and their families.
  • Ensure a safe and supportive environment during group and individual counseling sessions.
  • Uphold and exemplify the school's values and student management policies.
  • Support school leadership and educators in addressing disciplinary matters.
  • Consult with the administration to create comprehensive support strategies for students exhibiting challenging behaviors.

Preventative and Responsive Services:

  • Design, implement, and evaluate the guidance curriculum.
  • Utilize responsive counseling techniques, initiating individual and group sessions to address academic, social, and personal concerns.
  • Consult with families and staff to assess student needs and interests, providing appropriate educational recommendations.
  • Plan and deliver classroom guidance sessions that address academic achievement, career development, and personal growth, aiding students in decision-making and goal-setting.
  • Assess student needs and refer them to relevant school resources, social services, and community programs.
  • Intervene during crisis situations and participate in the school crisis response team.
  • Prepare students for transitions to high school and post-secondary opportunities.
  • Coordinate programs such as career fairs and attendance celebrations to enhance students' understanding of post-secondary options.
  • Assist students in navigating their academic and community experiences through individualized planning and goal-setting.

Family Engagement:

  • Establish and maintain effective communication with parents, providing consistent updates on student progress.
  • Be present at open houses, parent-teacher conferences, and other family engagement events.
  • Assist families in accessing services for their children through appropriate referrals and follow-ups.
  • Provide outreach and education on mental health and substance abuse issues to students, families, and community members.
  • Make oneself available to students, parents, and staff for support.
  • Design and coordinate activities that engage families and educate them on relevant issues.

Professional Development:

  • Pursue challenging professional goals annually.
  • Be open to offering and receiving constructive feedback to foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Engage in school-wide and individual professional development opportunities, including summer training and ongoing sessions throughout the academic year.
  • Participate in required internal and external training as mandated by school administration.

Accountability:

  • Conduct an annual program audit to evaluate the implementation and quality of counseling services.
  • Prepare and submit various reports and data to ensure compliance with established program requirements.
  • Utilize available data, including academic performance and attendance records, to identify students in need of support.
  • Interpret assessments and student data to develop tailored academic plans.
  • May oversee counseling interns as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Credential authorizing the provision of ERMHS services, such as a Pupil Personnel Service (PPS) credential, either completed or in progress.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Familiarity with ACSA Counseling standards.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficient in Google Classrooms and other relevant software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in low-income educational settings.
  • At least two years of experience in school counseling or extensive experience in urban school environments.
  • Experience in charter schools is preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods and work on a computer.
  • Proficient in motor coordination and finger dexterity for tasks such as typing.
  • Occasional physical effort may be required for handling objects up to twenty pounds.
  • Ability to navigate various departments within the organization.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
