Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Telescope Mechanic to join our team at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. As a key member of our Engineering Services Division, you will be responsible for providing routine maintenance and repair services to our radio telescopes and associated equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair services on radio telescopes and associated equipment
  • Assist in the installation, testing, and calibration of new equipment
  • Respond to mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues on telescopes and related equipment
  • Provide limited assistance in the operation and testing of telescope and operating equipment
  • Assist in the functional evaluation of newly installed equipment
  • Take and maintain inventory of parts
  • Maintain records of maintenance activities
  • Assist with indoor and outdoor painting
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe operating condition
  • Assist other maintenance and support personnel as assigned
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Preferred experience in mechanic work, industrial maintenance, and electrical troubleshooting
  • Valid NM Driver's license (Class A CDL preferred)
Working Conditions

The selected candidate must be able to work in a high-altitude environment (7,000 ft.) and be comfortable working in a high-noise area with personal protective equipment. The ability to climb antenna stairs and ladders to heights of above 100 feet and lift equipment up to 50 pounds (unassisted) is essential.
