Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Technical Specialist Lead to join our team at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. As a key member of our antenna mechanical maintenance group, you will be responsible for directing the overall activities of the team, controlling and coordinating technical support functions, and scheduling and coordinating work to ensure expeditious and efficient completion of projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and direct the work of subordinate technical personnel in areas such as construction, operation, and development of research equipment and facilities
  • Coordinate assigned technical support functions
  • Schedule and coordinate the work of the antenna mechanic group to ensure expeditious and efficient completion of assigned projects
  • Perform routine administrative tasks such as employee time keeping and purchase requisition approvals, budget, and regular reporting to VLA site management
  • Provide technical advice, guidance, and assistance to other observatory personnel
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • An associates degree in engineering technology or equivalent experience
  • At least 10 years of related experience
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts as they relate to radio telescopes
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Work Environment

This role will require you to work both outdoors on buildings and indoors in a shop. You will be working in high places, outside in all weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts and electrical equipment. Work is performed at a high altitude (7000 ft.) environment. You must be able to work in a high noise area with PPEs.
