Savannah, Georgia, United States Savannah River Nuclear Solutions Full time

Key Responsibilities

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) is looking for skilled Fire Protection Design Engineers with hands-on experience in the design of fire alarm and detection systems. This role encompasses the creation of technical drawings, calculations, and specifications, as well as providing support during construction and startup phases. You will also be responsible for reviewing vendor drawings and submittals while assisting various projects.

Your main duties will include conducting engineering task analyses, performing site walk-downs, and developing design outputs such as Location Plans, Connection Diagrams, Conduit/Block Diagrams, Logic Diagrams, Panel Detail Drawings, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, and Battery Loading Calculations, all in compliance with national consensus codes and standards.

In this position, you will offer technical assistance to construction teams, startup and testing personnel, suppliers, and subcontractors. You will prepare essential documents such as Data Sheets, Statements of Work, Procurement Specifications, Design Build Specifications, and Purchase Requisitions.

A solid understanding of electrical/control systems, connection diagrams, layout plans, logic diagrams, panel layout details, P&IDs, and battery loading calculations is essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is also required, along with the ability to conduct field assessments.

Problem Solving and Innovation

Scope technical tasks and devise innovative solutions to complex challenges. Begin utilizing SRNS systems and adhering to SRNS requirements with minimal supervision. Accept intricate tasks and receive guidance from senior professionals as needed.

Incorporate established engineering practices and address various complex features, including specialized materials or processes and challenging coordination requirements into your problem-solving and project planning.

Provide mentorship and direction to junior engineering professionals. Carry out development and qualification programs on tasks concurrently with other phases, such as design and fabrication, to better assess and mitigate future issues.

Develop alternative solutions to existing challenges and perform all necessary detailed work to identify optimal solutions. Evaluate proposals and make informed recommendations based on project assignments. You may delegate aspects of the detailed work to junior personnel and prepare cost and schedule estimates for proposed projects in your area of responsibility.

Exhibit cost and schedule awareness through the timely completion of assigned tasks and projects. Prepare manuals and documentation that support or promote the technical efforts undertaken.

Qualifications

Educational Background:
A degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a Registered Professional Engineer in Fire Protection is required. Mechanical Engineering candidates with Fire Protection experience will also be considered.

Preferred qualifications include graduation from an accredited fire protection engineering program, or being a Registered Professional Engineer in Fire Protection, a full member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), or holding NICET Level III certification in the relevant subfield.

Experience in design engineering at SRS or within DOE facilities is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate fire protection design experience in the nuclear or chemical process industries and possess a comprehensive understanding of applicable Codes and Standards for fire detection and alarm systems, including NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 90A, NFPA 101, IBC, and various ISA and IEEE standards.

Proficiency in 2D Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software is essential, with MicroStation experience being a plus.
