Job Title: Tax Analyst II-III

Join the Comptroller of Public Accounts team as a Tax Analyst II-III and contribute to the state's accounting, tax collection, and revenue estimation efforts.

About the Role:

The Tax Policy Division is seeking enthusiastic professionals with strong analytical and communication skills to fill various Tax Analyst positions. As a Tax Analyst, you will research and interpret tax laws, provide accurate and timely information to taxpayers, CPAs, state officials, and agency personnel, and navigate challenging tax policy determinations and legislative and legal interpretation issues.

Responsibilities:
  • Interpret tax statutes, rules, and policies regarding state tax for taxpayers, tax professionals, state officials, and agency personnel.
  • Provide assistance to internal and external customers, including responding to phone calls and drafting written responses to intermediate inquiries.
  • Draft intermediate administrative rules and rule amendments to reflect changes in legislation, hearings decisions, court cases, or agency policy in assigned tax.
  • Develop, review, and evaluate division's tax-related web content.
  • Develop and present intermediate classes to internal and external customers, review, and evaluate training presentation; develop course outlines, training aids, and class materials.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting, business, public administration, or a related field.
  • Preferred education: Law Degree (J.D.) or a bachelor's and/or master's degree in accounting with a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
  • Substitution of experience for education: Four years of qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement.
  • Minimum experience: Tax Analyst II: one year as a Tax Analyst I, two years as a Tax Accountant with a CPA certification, one year as a practicing attorney, or two years in a position with similar duties. Tax Analyst III: one year as a Tax Analyst II, three years as a Tax Accountant with CPA certification and experience in Texas state taxes, two years as a practicing tax attorney, or three years in a position with similar duties.
