Job Summary

UnitedHealth Group is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Support Specialist to join our Specialized Child and Youth Program (SCYP) team. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting children, youth, and families in foster care, adoption, and the juvenile justice system. Your expertise and experience will help individuals and families navigate complex challenges and develop skills for stability, independence, and success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide trauma-informed peer support to children, youth, and families, focusing on strengths-based approaches and skill development.
  • Collaborate with the SCYP Program Manager, clinical team, and community agencies to implement care coordination and peer support services.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with child-serving and family organizations, foster care and adoptive alumni groups, and internal committees.
  • Support consumers and family members with grievance processes and provide feedback on care planning development.
  • Advocate on behalf of youth and families, promoting their needs and interests.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma / GED (or higher)
  • 1+ year of experience / involvement with the child welfare system as a former foster child / youth or current/former foster parent
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Access to reliable transportation for travel to client and / or patient sites within a designated area
  • Ability to travel up to 75% of the time within a 60-mile radius of the greater Detroit, MI area
  • Thorough understanding of the child welfare system
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Working knowledge of community resources
