About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Research and Development Chemist to join our team at NewMarket Corporation. As a key member of our R&D team, you will be responsible for conducting complex and non-standard research, development, and performance testing activities to meet the objectives of our Technology Development team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute research and development projects to develop new products and technologies, and to improve existing ones.
  • Conduct experiments and analyze data to identify trends and patterns, and to develop new theories and models.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business, process, and marketing, to develop and implement new products and technologies.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of lubricating oil performance, including the development of structure/function relationships of componentry, reaction kinetics, dose-response relationships, and other mechanistic tools.
  • Design, synthesize, and characterize new components using standard analytical techniques, including NMR, MS, and spectroscopy.
  • Evaluate and interpret data, performance, and deliverables, and provide recommendations to R&D and project leaders regarding results, deliverables, progress, and challenges.
  • Participate in technical and project reviews, and present findings as appropriate.
  • Engage with assigned teams and cross-functional stakeholders to determine future direction.
  • Complete complex analytical testing procedures, in-depth analysis, and interpretation, and provide a detailed and accurate test report to the customer in a timely manner.
  • Lead or direct special research projects independently, and oversee technical activities and/or supervise technical team members assigned to the project.
  • Understand, comply, and promote safe laboratory and work practices, including appropriate safety regulations and procedures.
  • Assure that complete documentation is maintained on ISO or Quality System related activities, and participate in Quality System related activities.
  • Represent NewMarket Corporation in technical conferences, societies, and other industry activities, and maintain an adequate level of technical expertise and self-development through study, seminars, etc.
  • Participate in IP activities as required, including competitor reviews, freedom to practice assessments, patent filings, invention disclosures, etc.

Requirements

  • BS/PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Experience in different polymerization techniques, oligomer/polymer synthesis, monomer synthesis, surfactant synthesis, kinetic and mechanism study, and material characterization.
  • Strong utilization of theory and mechanism to drive inquiry and find applicable solutions.
  • Ability to build structure activity relations in highly complex systems.
  • Use of statistical analysis software for analyzing large data sets.
  • Decision making in a timely manner based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment.
  • Business insight, including understanding of the basis for our business model and how that is realized in the market.
