Position Overview:
As a key member of the healthcare team, the RN Nurse Specialist provides essential clinical leadership and specialized knowledge in the field of cardiovascular care. This role involves diagnosing patient responses to both actual and potential health issues related to surgical interventions. The specialist is responsible for delivering supportive and restorative care, health education, and case management in collaboration with the comprehensive healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Clinical Leadership: Deliver expert guidance and support to nursing staff, ensuring adherence to hospital policies.
  2. Patient Assessment: Conduct thorough nursing assessments upon patient admission, monitoring and implementing care for individuals undergoing cardiovascular surgeries.
  3. Assisting Surgical Procedures: Provide assistance to surgeons and anesthesia providers during various cardiovascular surgical interventions, including invasive procedures.
  4. Maintaining Sterility: Ensure a sterile environment while performing scrubbing and circulating duties, accurately documenting all relevant data.
  5. Emergency Response: Follow Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) protocols under the guidance of cardiac surgeons or anesthesia providers during emergencies.
  6. Research and Inventory Management: Collect data for research initiatives, manage medication and supply inventories, and support the Performance Improvement Program.
  7. Pacemaker Management: Reprogram permanent pacemakers as per physician directives.
  8. Competency Maintenance: Complete and uphold all cardiovascular-specific competencies related to scrubbing and circulating duties.
  9. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of implants and ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
  10. Education and Training: Participate in the education of nursing and medical students, developing teaching strategies that address the educational needs of staff.
  11. Staffing Evaluation: Assess staffing needs and recommend adjustments as necessary.
  12. Quality Assurance: Oversee compliance with quality care standards, implementing measures for quality improvement.
  13. On-Call Support: Assist with technical, radiological, and nursing functions for on-call procedures after hours.
  14. Organizational Goals: Meet established expectations regarding quality service, teamwork, self-development, and community engagement.
  15. Compliance: Fulfill all compliance responsibilities associated with the role.
  16. Additional Duties: Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education: Associate's Degree in Nursing required.
Licensure: Valid RN license in the state of Connecticut.
Certifications: BLS certification is mandatory; ACLS certification is preferred.
Experience: Minimum of one year of RN experience in the operating room or completion of Periop 101 is required. A minimum of three years of relevant job experience is also necessary.

Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred, along with certification in the area of specialty.

Working Conditions:
Manual dexterity and significant physical effort are required, with the ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force. The role involves exposure to various environmental factors.
