About the Position:
The Commonwealth of Virginia seeks a highly qualified individual to fill the position of Assistant Term Professor of Music, specifically in the area of Brass Studies.
This is a full-time, non-tenure track position with a focus on teaching, recruitment, and community engagement.
Responsibilities:
- Teach applied music lessons to graduate and undergraduate students in the Brass area;
- Recruit and retain students in the Brass area, including coordination of events and activities;
- Develop and implement recruitment strategies for the Brass area, including outreach to music educators and the broader music community;
- Teach instrumental methods courses for music education students, brass pedagogy and literature, and coach and conduct small and large brass ensembles;
- Collaborate with colleagues to support the Mason large ensembles and contribute to the development of the School of Music's mission and goals.
Required Qualifications:
- Terminal degree in music required;
- Distinguished record of teaching and artistry at the local and national level, including a demonstrated record of success creating and sustaining a successful performance career;
- Commitment to recruitment and developing relationships with music educators at the local, state and national level;
- Demonstrated success in working with colleagues and students from diverse backgrounds;
- Demonstrated success with teaching at the college level;
- Demonstrated success with engaging the music community, recruiting, and developing exceptional programs;
- Established reputation as a professional artist with a documented portfolio of live performances and recordings.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated success with teaching in the contexts of a liberal arts university;
- Demonstrated appreciation for a wide spectrum of brass music performance including classical, jazz, and contemporary/popular musical styles;
- Evidence of leadership and mentorship of adjunct applied professors in the brass area;
- Ability to guide research for brass doctoral students.
