Core Function:

Under the guidance of the Principal(s) and Director of Special Education, the role involves providing tailored educational experiences for students with special needs, fostering their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development. The position requires the adaptation of curricula and the preparation of lesson plans and instructional materials to align with the diverse abilities of students. The educator may work in various capacities including self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant settings as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Approaches

  • Collaborate with students, families, and educational staff to create Individualized Education Programs (IEP) through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
  • Implement educational, therapeutic, or skill enhancement programs, ensuring alignment with the unique needs of each student.
  • Design and utilize effective instructional strategies, activities, materials, and tools that cater to the learning styles and requirements of students.
  • Work alongside classroom teachers to adapt curricula and support special education students within mainstream classes.
  • Engage actively in ARD Committee meetings and conduct assessments of student learning to guide instructional planning.
  • Deliver subject matter in accordance with IEP guidelines, employing a variety of teaching techniques and media to accommodate individual student capabilities.
  • Oversee and delegate tasks to teacher aides and volunteers, integrating technology into the educational process and remaining updated on advancements in educational technology.

Student Development and Progress

  • Conduct ongoing formal and informal evaluations of student progress and provide necessary personal, medical, and feeding care as outlined in their IEP.
  • Lead extracurricular activities as assigned and approved by the campus principal, serving as a positive role model for students and supporting the mission of the educational institution.

Classroom Management and Structure

  • Establish a learning environment that promotes the physical, emotional, and social growth of students.
  • Manage student behavior, enforce discipline, and intervene in crisis situations, including physical restraint when necessary, in accordance with IEPs and safety protocols.
  • Consult with teachers regarding behavior management strategies and collaborate with district and external resources to address students' educational, social, medical, and personal needs.
  • Take necessary precautions to safeguard students, equipment, and facilities, and assist in selecting appropriate books and instructional materials.

Communication

  • Foster open communication with students, families, principals, and teachers through regular meetings.
  • Maintain professional relationships and effective communication with colleagues, students, parents, and community members, ensuring accurate and clear information dissemination.

Professional Development

  • Engage in staff development initiatives to enhance job-related skills and demonstrate a commitment to professional growth.
  • Stay informed about state, district, and school regulations and policies relevant to special education, ensuring all necessary reports, records, and documents are maintained.
  • Attend faculty meetings and participate in staff committees as required.

Supervisory Duties

  • Oversee assigned teacher aides.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Exhibit professional, ethical, and responsible behavior, maintaining confidentiality and serving as a role model for district staff.
  • Participate in approved professional development opportunities and undertake other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of:

  • Special needs of students in assigned areas and the processes for setting and implementing IEP goals.
  • Curriculum design, instructional methods, and the ARD Committee process.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills, including tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Methods for collecting and organizing data and information.
  • Operation of computers and relevant software.
  • District policies and procedures as well as pertinent federal and state laws.

Ability to:

  • Effectively instruct students.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Communicate proficiently in both oral and written formats.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Manage multiple complex projects, adhere to deadlines, and maintain consistent attendance.
  • Plan and organize daily operations, analyze situations accurately, and implement effective action plans.

Qualifications

  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with necessary endorsements for the assigned subject/level.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • At least one semester of student teaching or one year of an approved internship.

  • Ability to manage frequent interruptions, handle complex projects simultaneously, maintain emotional control under stress, and communicate effectively.
