Job Summary

The Pharmacy Associate Service Chief is a critical role within the Veterans Health Administration, responsible for leading the pharmacy service in a medical facility. This position requires a licensed pharmacist with a PharmD and prior managerial and leadership experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage multiple programs, including inpatient and outpatient distributive programs.
  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards in a Complexity Level 1a facility.
  • Maintain effective relationships with all service chiefs, supervisors, employees, and other hospital staff.
  • Manage Outpatient Pharmacy Section programs to ensure medications are dispensed safely and efficiently.
  • Manage Inpatient Clinical and Distributive Pharmacy Section program to ensure medications are dispensed safely and efficiently.
  • Oversee daily operations of the controlled substances program within Pharmacy Service.
  • Ensure adequate competency and training of staff.
  • Maintain drug accountability of all controlled substances in all areas of Pharmacy.
  • Share responsibility for ensuring compliance with wide variety of regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure pharmacy policies are reviewed and/or revised in a timely manner.
  • Provide service sufficient to meet needs of patients and healthcare staff.
  • Monitor expenditures.
  • Assist with managing budgets and personnel ceilings.
  • Function as Chief in the absence of Pharmacy Chief.
Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
  • Licensure: Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency: Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
