Job Summary

The City of Grand Rapids, MI is seeking a highly skilled Internal Auditor II to join our team. As a key member of our internal audit department, you will be responsible for conducting financial audits of city departments, agencies, and programs in accordance with General Accepted Governing Auditing Standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, assign, and evaluate the work of Internal Auditor I; provide counseling and training as needed.
  • Conduct financial audits of city departments; review fiscal controls and provide recommendations to departments.
  • Develop audit programs, understand the program being audited, and review source documents and financial transactions.
  • Coordinate financial information with outside auditors for the annual audit.
  • Monitor key financial and general ledger accounts.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate the work of the internal audit section.
  • Develop various information to assist management in the improvement of financial controls and procedures; provide analyses of budget issues and explanatory materials to management.
  • Follow up on completed audits; monitor key issues to facilitate implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Conduct audits for external agencies related to the city government.
  • Prepare various correspondence and reports related to the work; attend various meetings related to the work.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, auditing, finance, or a related field.
  • At least five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in auditing and budget analysis.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Internal Auditor.
  • Certified Public Accountant.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Governmental accounting principles and practices.
  • City government functions and operations.
  • Data processing applications for financial auditing purposes.
  • Principles, theory, methods, and practices of basic accounting - GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
Ability to
  • Plan, coordinate, and organize fiscal year-end counts.
  • Communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Prepare clear and comprehensive audit reports.
  • Recommend corrective measures to safeguard City assets.
  • Meet schedules and deadlines of the work.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries.
