POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the guidance of the Behavioral and Mental Health Coordinator and Behavior Specialist, the Behavior Support Technician will provide assistance, tutoring, and instruction to students exhibiting behavioral and/or mental health challenges. This role involves the direct application of skill-building and behavior modification strategies as outlined by the Behavior Specialist. Furthermore, the Behavior Support Technician will contribute to the execution of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Special Education initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work closely under the direction of the Behavioral and Mental Health Coordinator and Behavior Specialist, engaging in weekly meetings to discuss student progress, data analysis, and ethical considerations.
  • Gather data utilizing various objective methods, including continuous and discontinuous measurement, permanent product recording, and updating graphical representations.
  • Conduct preference assessments, such as stimulus preference assessments and social skills evaluations, while assisting with Functional Behavior Assessment processes.
  • Implement chaining techniques, stimulus control transfers, prompting, and fading strategies.
  • Apply behavior modification techniques, including reinforcement contingencies, antecedent modifications, differential reinforcement, extinction strategies, and emergency response protocols.
  • Complete necessary documentation, including generating objective notes that reflect daily activities.
  • Collaborate with the Behavior Specialist to provide training support for staff in classroom management and behavioral strategies, including modeling, coaching, and offering constructive feedback.
  • Assist in the execution of programs tailored for students with behavioral and/or mental health needs, including but not limited to autism and emotional disturbances.
  • Offer support to students across various educational settings, adapting to different grade levels, disabilities, and placements for both short and long-term assignments.
  • Participate in delivering professional development related to behavioral and mental health, covering topics such as educationally related mental health services, functional analysis assessments, and evidence-based practices.
  • Promote positive behavior intervention strategies throughout the organization, including systems at individual educational sites.
  • Collect data in accordance with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), behavior support plans, and organizational procedures.
  • Maintain logs for student contacts, behaviors, and professional development activities.
  • Assist educators and the behavioral health team in adapting classroom tasks, materials, and curricula to meet the diverse educational and behavioral needs of students.
  • Foster a safe learning environment through vigilant supervision of assigned students in various settings, including classrooms, cafeterias, school grounds, and during community outings.
  • Help maintain an organized and structured classroom and school environment.
  • Support students with personal care needs as required (e.g., hygiene tasks).
  • Engage in meetings and professional development activities as assigned.
  • Uphold a high standard of professionalism, ethical conduct, and confidentiality regarding student-specific information.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Basic curriculum knowledge in subjects such as mathematics, reading, and writing

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education: High School Diploma (or equivalent) along with 48 college units, or a degree, or the ability to demonstrate college-level skills by passing the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) proficiency assessment.
Experience: A minimum of two years working with students with special needs.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and proof of current auto insurance coverage.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands: Ability to occasionally lift, push, pull, run, carry, and drag up to seventy-five (75) pounds; walk, stand, bend, stoop, and twist continuously; squat, kneel, and climb stairs; grasp and manipulate materials and equipment frequently; utilize sight, hearing, and speech continuously; apply appropriate techniques for crisis intervention as necessary.

Working Conditions: The role involves working in indoor classrooms, outdoor school environments, students' homes, and community settings. Exposure to moderate noise levels and seasonal weather conditions may occur.
