Role Overview

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer plays a crucial role in leveraging engineering methodologies to enhance the planning and development of tools, techniques, processes, and machinery aimed at optimizing the quality of the final output while ensuring efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This position may focus on either Assembly or Machining operations.

This role is directly accountable to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the quality of machined parts and completed assemblies by identifying, assessing, and resolving issues related to production, processes, and quality.
  • Conduct analysis, planning, and design of work area layouts, equipment, resources, and production techniques to fulfill customer requirements and meet internal takt time goals.
  • Propose enhancements for workforce efficiency and waste reduction by pursuing True North principles, restructuring job roles, reorganizing workflows, and relocating workstations and equipment to facilitate one-piece flow where feasible.
  • Lead, coordinate, and promote continuous improvement initiatives, kaizen events, and cost-saving projects.
  • Engage in daily WAR (walk around review) meetings on the shop floor, driving problem-solving activities using RBS tools.
  • Prepare cost estimates for the implementation of process enhancements, including labor, equipment, material costs, and assembly capabilities.
  • Oversee and coordinate projects related to equipment acquisition, installation, or modification, including the preparation of CAPEX documentation, project budgets, and timelines.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to ascertain product specifications for equipment, materials, or components, and evaluate products based on production needs and quality standards.
  • Develop and validate programs (as necessary) for CNC (computer numerical control) machines and/or robotic and testing equipment.
  • Design workflows, workstations, and work cells in compliance with safety, environmental, and ergonomic standards.
  • Establish, maintain, and enhance production routings to provide clear and essential work instructions to production staff, focusing on quality improvement and cost reduction.
  • Offer leadership, technical guidance, and training for manufacturing personnel on new assembly and/or machining processes.
  • Potentially represent the organization in technical discussions with external vendors and/or clients, including travel to observe new methodologies, trade shows, workshops, customer visits, and repairs as necessary.
  • Assist in work measurement initiatives and analyze work samples to develop standards for labor utilization.

  • Proficient in interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and performing complex mathematical calculations.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify the need for modifications in procedures or processes, determine root causes, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that foster teamwork and collaboration, developing high-quality working relationships to influence and achieve results.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey technical concepts to production associates and address inquiries.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle proprietary information with integrity.
  • Intermediate proficiency in CAD and MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Basic understanding of finance, capital appropriations, and budgeting practices, with the ability to perform manufacturing analysis and estimate costs related to labor, equipment, materials, and assembly capabilities.
  • Willingness to travel domestically up to 10% for visits to other sites, vendor and/or customer engagements, training events, and trade shows.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, or Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline is required.
  • Education or training in CNC Machining, robotics, and/or testing equipment is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of engineering experience in a dynamic manufacturing or machining environment, with a proven track record of implementing process or product improvements, is required.
  • Experience with products that have tolerances less than 0.0005" is preferred.
  • Familiarity with turning, milling, and grinding processes is desired.
  • Experience in gear design (hobbing, skiving, and grinding) is preferred.
  • Prior experience with mechanical assembly, product testing, and electromechanical power transmission technology is beneficial.
  • Experience utilizing advanced quality tools and/or lean manufacturing principles is preferred.

Physical Demands:
Potential physical demands may include frequent sitting and occasional bending and stooping. Sensory demands may include hearing and vision. Ability to lift and/or maneuver up to 30 pounds without assistance, or heavier loads with the aid of a lifting device for setting up test equipment. Must be capable of working in a typical manufacturing environment and traveling to various facilities, which may involve walking, climbing, and navigating around operational equipment.

Work Environment:

The majority of time is spent in a manufacturing production setting where personal protective equipment must be worn, and safety protocols must be followed.
