Job Overview:

The Senior Accountant operates with minimal oversight from the Fiscal Officer of the Arizona Board of Nursing, executing professional accounting tasks that necessitate the consistent application of established accounting principles, theories, concepts, and practices.

This role serves as the principal accountant responsible for processing procurement invoices, recording financial transactions, reviewing and tracking grant expenses, updating the agency's budget actuals, and managing payroll functions.

The responsibilities of the Senior Accountant demand a high level of technical expertise and proficiency.

Key Responsibilities:


• The Senior Accountant is tasked with managing payroll adjustments, credit card reporting, fixed asset accounting, inventory management, aiding in the preparation of agency budgets, and ensuring data integrity, accuracy, and compliance with financial standards and regulations. This includes handling accounts payable and receivable, travel expenses, general ledger maintenance, daily accounting operations, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and tracking federal grant expenses. This position collaborates on a diverse range of accounting activities such as ledger maintenance, transaction recording, budget actuals updates, and vendor interactions.


• Continuously reviews ledger accounts for all transactions. Conducts reconciliations of reports and financial data, identifying and rectifying inconsistencies or errors. Ensures proper allocation of costs to the relevant federal, state, or other funding sources.


• Leads the creation and revision of desk procedures and assists in developing policies and procedures for the Fiscal Services department. Aids in streamlining processes or procedures related to Fiscal Services when necessary.


• Provides training support to Fiscal Services staff, offering solutions and recommendations for improvements on identified financial issues, and researching guidance on various topics.


• Performs additional duties as assigned related to the position.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge:


• Extensive knowledge of reference materials such as federal regulations, applicable statutes, agency manuals, and policies and procedures.


• In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the principles, concepts, practices, methods, and techniques of governmental accounting.


• Familiarity with economic and accounting principles and practices, as well as the analysis and reporting of financial data.


• Significant knowledge of automated financial systems and their methodologies.


• Proficient in financial research methodologies.


• Understanding of internal control structures and fiscal management.

Skills:


• Ability to collaborate effectively with team members and other agency personnel to achieve common objectives.


• Capacity to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities regularly.


• Strong analytical skills for researching and reviewing financial data.


• Proficient in Microsoft Excel & Word, Google Sheets & Docs.


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Abilities:


• Critical thinking skills to resolve inquiries and issues presented by clients.


• Ability to communicate in a timely, professional, and productive manner with supervisors.


• Competence in collecting, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting financial data.


• Capability to work independently as well as part of a team.


• Willingness to embrace change and acquire new skills.

Education and Certification Requirements:


• A Bachelor's Degree in accounting from an accredited institution; or a Bachelor's degree in a related field with at least 24 semester hours of accounting coursework; and two years of experience as an Accountant 1, 2, or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:


• Prior experience with AZ360 is preferred.
