Unit Overview:

The Senior Heavy Equipment Technician operates within the Maintenance Unit of CDOT's Region 4. This unit is dedicated to preserving the Colorado Department of Transportation's highway infrastructure and facilities, ensuring they remain in optimal condition for public safety.

Role Responsibilities:

This experienced technician is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, troubleshooting, modifying, and repairing both light and heavy vehicles, as well as specialized equipment for snow, ice, and road maintenance. The goal is to maintain the entire fleet in safe operational condition, adhering to the standards set by the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) and CDOT.

Key duties include:

  • Diagnosing issues, disassembling units, inspecting components, and analyzing failures.
  • Replacing or repairing defective parts and reassembling units across various systems including brakes, electrical, hydraulic, and engine systems.
  • Conducting preventive maintenance, which involves routine checks, inspections, and adjustments on fluid levels, brakes, tires, and engines.
  • Maintaining detailed service logs and records of maintenance activities.
  • Completing annual DOT safety inspections and certifying vehicles for compliance.
  • Utilizing diagnostic tools to identify equipment malfunctions.
  • Performing visual inspections and test drives to ensure equipment functionality.
  • Fabricating and installing replacement parts as necessary.
  • Documenting all maintenance and repair activities and tracking compliance with Federal DOT regulations.
  • Ordering necessary parts and supplies to maintain equipment operability.
  • Preparing work orders using SAP.
  • Prioritizing safety for oneself, colleagues, and the public.
  • Staying updated on safety procedures and regulations.
  • Engaging in continuous learning through training and development opportunities.
  • Participating in regional training sessions and meetings.
  • Attending equipment commissioning training sessions provided by vendors.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
Work Environment:

Work hours vary by season, with summer hours being Monday to Thursday from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and winter hours from Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The role involves approximately 40% fieldwork and 60% shop work.

Emergency response outside regular hours may be required, including overtime, weekends, and holidays. On-call duties may also be necessary.

Physical requirements include lifting up to 70 lbs, bending, kneeling, and climbing in and out of vehicles. Frequent travel is expected for field repairs and training sessions.

Exposure to varying weather conditions, loud noises, and potential hazards is part of the job. Effective communication via radio and phone is essential.

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B without restrictions on air brakes or manual transmissions at the time of application.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair, including at least one year of heavy diesel equipment diagnosis and repair.
  • Alternatively, completion of a formal apprenticeship program or relevant coursework from an accredited institution may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Conditions of Employment:

All candidates must maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B with no restrictions on air brakes.

Pre-employment screenings will include checks of social security numbers, criminal records, educational records, and driving history.

New hires are required to complete two weeks of maintenance training.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in heavy equipment mechanics, demonstrating proficiency in the responsibilities outlined above, and possess:

  • A valid CDL Class B with no restrictions on air brakes.
  • Medium/Heavy truck ASE Certifications in Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, and Heating, Ventilation, and A/C.
