Job Title: Vice President, Perioperative Services

The Vice President of Perioperative Services is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing all aspects of perioperative services, including quality and safety, patient and family experience, growth, access, throughput, and financial performance. This role supports strategic planning, access strategy, operations, financial management, quality initiatives, regulatory compliance, and system integration while fostering a culture that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Chief Nurse Executive in leading the organization's efforts to promote a culture focused on delivering world-class patient and family-focused care achieved through an exceptional and highly engaged workforce.
  • Engage in the planning, execution, and implementation of overall nursing plan consistent with hospital policies and objectives, to provide continuous nursing care and services.
  • Collaboratively work with operations, providers, practices, and other system functions to ensure an integrated approach to high-quality clinical services.
  • Participate in the hospital quality assurance and improvement program through evaluation of services rendered, quality improvement, and audit of medical records, patient visits, and counseling with hospital staff.
  • Provide leadership, on behalf of Chief Nurse Executive, for key organizational projects working in partnership with stakeholders to ensure effective and efficient planning and successful project implementations that achieve on-time and budget targets.
  • Collaborate with operational areas to develop and implement strategic business plans. Operationalize business plans for assigned areas. Translate initiatives into action plans at the system level with appropriate performance measures. Assume fiscal responsibility through budgetary planning and implementation.
  • Develop and provide key performance indicators (KPIs) to establish the appropriate framework for perioperative metrics to align with overall organizational strategy. Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning of new perioperative programs/strategies and regulatory action, as those items affect the ambulatory surgery center, community hospitals and consequently, the broader health system. Work collaboratively with nursing leadership across business entities to ensure policies, procedures, strategy, and program are integrated and aligned.
  • Partner with supply chain, sterile processing, and surgical and anesthesia leadership for peri-operative cost savings and standardization initiatives.
  • Establish solid plan and approach for providing patients with timely and efficient access to healthcare services through efficient scheduling. Regularly review access metrics, patient feedback, and seek provider and team-member input to make adjustments and improvements to the access strategy.
  • Optimize workflows to minimize inefficiencies. Track key performance indicators such as wait times, first-case on-time starts, OR utilization, OR room-closures, case migrations, case length accuracy, and no-show rates to monitor the success of the perioperative access strategy.
  • Establish trust as a leader in key initiatives and strategies to continually improve the quality and level of services provided. Lead/participate in process improvement as appropriate.
  • Create an environment that supports team member and provider engagement, satisfaction, and equity.
  • Oversee human resource management for the assigned area creating a culture of employee engagement. Ensure HR policies are administered consistently across function. Organize nursing through appropriate structure and delegation of functions using staffing models/tools to achieve productivity and optimize the delivery of patient care. Identify succession planning needs within the nursing team.
  • Promote team building and collaboration. Motivate, encourage, and empower staff to achieve personal, organizational, and team goals. Recognize accomplishment. Encourage and provide opportunity for staff input and feedback regarding improvement opportunities. Mentor and coach the leadership team. Regularly communicate, inform, and update staff on organizational and industry issues. Advocate for patients.
  • Partner across the organization to support access and smooth transition of care for patients across care settings to ensure optimal setting of care to address patient needs. Create and lead organizational models of care that drive effective communication, enhance operational efficiency, and establish meaningful partnerships driving coordinated care.
  • Collaborate with MCVP leadership to plan, implement, and evaluate goals, set objectives, define a mission, and emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of patient care delivery. Assume the leadership role in the achievement of both short- and long-term goals.
  • Demonstrate compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations, including those related to Medicaid, Medicare, and HIPAA, and all VCUHS policies, and monitor compliance by staff as evidence by: emphasizing security measures for patient, staff, and organization to maintain confidential and private information; providing information to staff and customers regarding reporting options for potential violations; cooperating with investigations of complaints; taking prompt and appropriate actions for violations; participating in regulatory rounds to monitor adherence by staff with standards and regulations; monitoring compliance with legal, regulatory, or policy practices for subordinates.
  • Collaborate with other areas to maintain a contemporary knowledge of urban teaching hospital and community hospital approach, lean process improvement, safety and quality developments, cost of care and industry trends. Identify and articulate the vision and direction for nursing and patient care services and collaborate on the implementation of strategies to achieve them. Promote continuity, consistency, and standardization, to the extent possible, of nursing and patient care services care across the organization.
  • Serve as the peri-operative and procedural professional practice content expert for the medical center.
  • Provide leadership and direction for the management of clinical expenses. Provide leadership and direction to maintain appropriate departmental supplies and functioning equipment. Guide Peri-operative Director(s) in all financial functions and activities to ensure efficient daily operations.

Employment Qualifications:
  • Required Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing. Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing, Health Care Administration, Business Administration, Public Health Administration, or related field.
  • Preferred Education: DNP or PhD preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification Required: Current Registered Nurse licensure in Virginia and eligible AHA, BLS Certification or equivalent.
  • Licensure/Certification Preferred: Certification in nursing administration (NE-BC, NEA-BC, CENP), Certified Surgical Services Manager (CSSM), Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR), Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN), Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse (CAPA), Certified Ambulatory Surgery Nurse (CNAMB).
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Years and Type of Required Experience: Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible healthcare supervision/management, financial management, and administrative/operational experience in a healthcare setting, including a minimum of ten (10) years in a management and/or leadership role within hospital operations.
  • Experience in leadership role at a Magnet Designated hospital and academic medical center.
  • Demonstrated leadership and initiative in healthcare service excellence and business growth.
  • Demonstrated success working in a matrixed management model.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and conflict management skills.
  • Strong operational leadership ability, fiscal competency, knowledge of resource planning and staffing system.
