The City of Tacoma is seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join the Generation Section. This role is integral to providing mechanical engineering support for both capital and maintenance initiatives at our hydroelectric and fisheries facilities.

As a Professional Engineer, you will be recognized as a subject matter expert in the operation, maintenance, repair, and enhancement of mechanical systems and equipment within the Generation sector. Your contributions will be vital in ensuring the ongoing availability of our generating resources and fisheries operations.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with diverse teams on the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of fish facilities and hydropower plants.
  • Prepare, review, and validate calculations, drawings, and reports related to mechanical systems.
  • Draft specifications and engineering documents for the procurement and installation of various mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Support the evaluation, selection, procurement, installation, testing, and acceptance of project activities and equipment.
  • Represent the City during shop inspections and factory acceptance tests concerning mechanical systems.
  • Coordinate with contractors and hydro project staff to repair and upgrade systems and equipment.
  • Plan and oversee the installation, disassembly, reassembly, and alignment of mechanical equipment.
  • Provide recommendations for operations & maintenance and asset management programs for mechanical systems.

The mechanical equipment relevant to this position includes, but is not limited to, utility-scale generators, hydroelectric turbines, balance-of-plant systems (such as air, oil, and water), large valves, gates, cranes, and hoists. Additionally, you will work with fisheries facilities mechanical equipment, including motors, pumps, piping, valves, and water-treatment systems.


Qualifications:
For the Associate Power Systems Engineer role, a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field is required, along with a minimum of 2 years of engineering experience in a power utility or possession of Washington State EIT. For the Power Systems Engineer, PE position, a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field is required, along with at least 4 years of professional engineering experience in a power utility.

Licensing and Certifications: All candidates must complete Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) training within 6 months of hire and maintain certification thereafter. A valid Washington State Driver's License is also required.
