JOB PURPOSE:

The Quality Assurance Operations Manager is tasked with overseeing and enhancing the food safety and quality protocols within the facility to ensure adherence to all corporate standards for producing safe and high-quality pet food products. This role includes supervising the QA Supervisor, QA Laboratory Technicians, and Sanitation Supervisor, while also developing and executing inspection, sampling, testing, and monitoring initiatives to guarantee that all products manufactured align with customer specifications. The QA Operations Manager acts as the Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) and ensures compliance with all relevant food safety regulations and industry standards, keeping plant management and personnel updated on the latest legislative changes, scientific advancements, emerging food safety challenges, and pertinent industry codes of practice. Additionally, the QA Operations Manager serves as the SQF Practitioner.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Champion the corporate Food Safety and Quality Objectives as outlined in the company's Management Policy.
  • Oversee the food safety and quality systems, including current Good Manufacturing Practices, prerequisite food safety programs, and HACCP/Food Safety Plan, to comply with the SQF Food Safety Code for Manufacturing.
  • Utilize statistical process control (SPC) and other quality tools to minimize process variation and conduct root cause analysis of non-conformities.
  • Manage the Food Safety Plan to ensure alignment with FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards such as NIST Handbook 133 and labeling requirements.
  • Support and supervise the QA Supervisor, QA Laboratory Technicians, and Sanitation Supervisor.
  • Ensure that SSOPs and food safety/quality policies, procedures, and schedules are effectively implemented, understood, regularly assessed, and improved upon.
  • Guarantee that environmental monitoring and microbiological testing of finished products are conducted, assessed, and enhanced as per company policies.
  • Coordinate direct process control, product evaluation/inspection, and analytical testing activities.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret relevant data to inform decision-making.
  • Facilitate both external and internal food safety/quality audits and inspections for the facility.
  • Lead cross-functional teams in investigating customer/consumer complaints and prepare or review corrective action reports (CARs).
  • Identify and investigate failures, non-conformance incidents, and unusual occurrences, collaborating with cross-functional teams to implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Review trends in quality complaints to identify areas for improvement.
  • Manage the QA Hold Program and associated inventory.
  • Contribute actively to achieving plant KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and maintain reporting on site-specific food safety/quality KPIs.
  • Travel to various locations as necessary for operational needs.
  • Identify training needs related to food safety and quality, and develop/implement employee training programs.
  • Serve as a technical resource for the operations team and other departments regarding product food safety and quality.
  • Mentor and coach food safety, quality, and sanitation personnel to foster teamwork.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Develop and manage the site Food Safety and Quality budget.
  • Oversee organic and export programs for the facility.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or a related scientific discipline with a minimum of 3 years of experience in the food industry; OR an associate degree in sciences, a bachelor's degree in a non-science discipline with at least 5 years of experience in the food industry; OR a minimum of 10 years of experience in the food industry.
  • Experience in auditing, inspections, and quality assurance.
  • Technical expertise in food safety and quality systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and corrective action skills.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication abilities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
  • Familiarity with laboratory instruments and their operation.
  • Capable of performing routine calibration checks and basic maintenance of laboratory instruments.
  • Track NIR accuracy through analytical results and communicate necessary adjustments to QA Technicians.
  • Coordinate NIR calibration adjustments as required.
  • Troubleshoot laboratory equipment issues.
  • Identify suppliers and ensure that materials meet requirements for intended use at competitive prices.
