Clinical Specimen Collection Specialist

Position Title: Clinical Specimen Collection Specialist
Compensation: $20.02 per hour
Role Summary:
This full-time position is available at our Lakewood Medical Clinic. The successful candidate will be tasked with performing phlebotomy, conducting waived tests, Automated CBCs, EKGs, and Spirometry, while also assisting in the diagnostic and treatment processes for patients. Responsibilities include maintaining laboratory records, processing specimens for external referrals, and providing support to the Medical Lab Technician or Medical Technologist as needed.

Specific Duties Include:
- Adhering to Universal Precautions to prevent biohazard contamination during blood collection, handling, preservation, and transportation of bodily fluids, ensuring cleanliness and disinfection of work areas, and proper disposal of contaminated materials using personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Observing and complying with OSHA safety regulations and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA Privacy) guidelines.
- Welcoming patients and ensuring effective communication to maintain their comfort and calmness.
- Accurately identifying patients by name and date of birth, labeling collection tubes, and following precise timing for specimen collection.
- Collecting blood specimens through venipuncture and capillary methods, providing clear instructions to patients.
- Verifying test orders in Electronic Health Records (EHR).
- Following established policies and procedures for quality assurance and control, ensuring accurate and reliable test results.
- Maintaining documentation of temperature, preventive maintenance activities, methods, quality control, and assurance.
- Following the Laboratory Manual's policies and procedures for safety and infection control.
- Maintaining regular communication with healthcare providers and nursing staff regarding patient care.
- Restocking reagents and requesting replacement supplies from referral laboratories, ensuring reagent expiration dates are monitored.
- Protecting the privacy and security of Personal Health Information in accordance with HIPAA and adhering to OSHA and CLIA regulations.
- Assisting support personnel across various departments as needed and working overtime when required.
Additional Responsibilities:
- EKG: Preparing the examination room, ensuring patient modesty and dignity, applying electrodes, operating the EKG machine to obtain accurate tracings, and maintaining equipment.
- Spirometry: Calibrating equipment daily, preparing patients for testing, reporting results to licensed providers, and maintaining equipment.
- Specimen Processing: Verifying test orders in EHR, processing specimens according to laboratory guidelines, and communicating with providers and laboratory staff for efficient operations.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program is mandatory.
- X-ray training is required.
- A minimum of one year of experience in a clinical or hospital setting is preferred.
- CPR/BLS certification is necessary.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is highly desirable.
