Overview:

The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting clinical tests in various laboratory sections, including general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure accurate and timely results, such as quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency assessments, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for notifying healthcare professionals of significant findings. Additionally, the technician performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy tasks essential for the daily operations of the laboratory. The role also involves the provision and management of blood products as required by the medical staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Ensures that the organization’s philosophy and core values are reflected in the services provided to clients.

• Specimen Collection and Management – proficiently collects blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; operates pneumatic tube systems; adheres to procedures for processing and testing specimens, including the use of various centrifuges; collects other designated patient specimens as outlined in procedural manuals.

• Result Management – identifies errors or unlikely results and takes necessary actions; reports critical values according to established policies; conducts tests within designated timeframes; performs laboratory analyses in the following areas: Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing of blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers in accordance with established protocols.

• Quality Control – performs, analyzes, and documents quality control measures following established policies and procedures, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO guidelines; tracks and reports performance improvement indicators.

• Equipment Maintenance – conducts routine and periodic preventative maintenance with proper documentation; troubleshoots minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies/reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards those that are expired.

• Professional Development – takes initiative for personal and professional growth through continued education.

• Training – assists in the orientation and training of new staff and students in laboratory practices.

• Compliance – adheres to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards.

• Safety Protocols – follows established safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous materials protocols.

• Laboratory Information Systems – utilizes LIS and HIS computer systems effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Competency Assessment – successfully completes annual competency assessments by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA regulations.
  • Completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently holds the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician).
  • OR 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including a minimum of 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology courses.
  • OR 24 semester hours of science courses, including six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • AND laboratory training that includes completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another organization recognized by HHS, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.
  • No prior experience required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program.
  • OR Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including a clinical rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years.
  • State Licensure required in Louisiana.
  • New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
