Overview:

The Clinical Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting diagnostic tests across various laboratory sections, including general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all tasks essential for delivering precise and timely results, such as quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for notifying healthcare professionals of significant findings. Additionally, this position involves clerical duties, general support, and phlebotomy tasks necessary for the smooth operation of the laboratory. The technician also manages the provision of blood products as requested by medical personnel.

Key Responsibilities:


• Adheres to the core competencies expected by Christus Health, demonstrating leadership qualities in self-management and team collaboration.

• Specimen Collection and Processing – proficiently collects blood samples through venipuncture or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; operates pneumatic tube systems; follows established procedures for specimen processing and testing, including the use of various centrifuges; collects additional patient specimens as specified in procedural guidelines.

• Result Management – identifies discrepancies or unusual results and takes necessary actions; reports critical values in accordance with established policies; conducts laboratory tests within designated timeframes across multiple sections, including Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank protocols, including crossmatching and blood product dispensing; operates automated laboratory analyzers following standard procedures.

• Quality Control – performs, analyzes, and documents quality control measures in compliance with established policies and regulatory standards, including CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO; monitors and reports performance improvement metrics.

• Equipment Maintenance – conducts routine and periodic preventative maintenance with appropriate documentation; troubleshoots minor issues and coordinates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies and reagents, ensuring timely restocking; reviews and adheres to policy and procedure manuals; ensures reagents are dated and expired items are discarded.

• Professional Development – takes initiative in pursuing professional growth and continuing education opportunities.

• Training and Mentorship – assists in the onboarding and training of new staff and students in laboratory procedures.

• Compliance – adheres to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards.

• Safety Protocols – follows established safety, infection control, security, and hazardous materials protocols.

• Laboratory Information Systems – utilizes LIS and HIS systems effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Competency Assessment – successfully completes annual competency assessments by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience as per CLIA regulations.
  • Completion of a U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration, holding the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist.
  • OR 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including a minimum of 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours in science courses, comprising six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • AND laboratory training through completion of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or other HHS-approved organizations, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.
  • No prior experience required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program.
  • OR a minimum of six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including a clinical rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or an accredited laboratory within the last five years.
  • State licensure is required in Louisiana.
  • New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (Board Certification must be completed within one year of hire, excluding Louisiana).
