Overview:

The Medical Laboratory Technician plays a crucial role in performing clinical assessments within various sections, including general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This position encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, which include quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory instruments. The technician is responsible for identifying abnormal critical values and adhering to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, this role involves clerical, general, and phlebotomy tasks essential for the laboratory's daily functions, including the provision of blood products as required by healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:


• Upholds the standards of the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Ensures that the organization's philosophy and core values are reflected in the services provided to clients.

• Specimen Collection and Management – adeptly obtains blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; manages pneumatic tube systems; adheres to protocols for processing and testing specimens, including operating various centrifuges; collects other specified patient specimens as outlined in procedural manuals.

• Result Management – identifies discrepancies or unusual results and takes necessary actions; reports critical values according to established policies; conducts tests within designated timeframes; performs laboratory testing in various sections, including Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers following established guidelines.

• Quality Control – conducts, analyzes, and documents quality control measures in accordance with policies and procedures, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; performs and records performance improvement metrics and communicates findings.

• Maintenance and Troubleshooting – carries out daily and periodic preventative maintenance with appropriate documentation; addresses minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies/reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards those that are expired.

• Professional Development – takes initiative in pursuing professional growth and ongoing education.

• Training – assists in the orientation and training of new staff and students in laboratory practices.

• Compliance – adheres to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations.

• Safety Protocols – follows established safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous materials protocols.

• Laboratory Information Systems – utilizes LIS and HIS computer systems effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Competency Assessment – successfully completes annual competency assessments by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR.
  • A) Successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently hold the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician);
  • OR B) 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that includes at least 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses,
  • OR 24 semester hours of science courses that encompass six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination;
  • AND C) Laboratory training that includes either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or another organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
  • No experience is required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by NAACLS or other organizations approved by HHS.
  • OR Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, which must include a clinical rotation through the following sections of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years.
  • State Licensure is required in Louisiana.
  • New Graduates that are Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
