Job Overview

Summary:

The Clinical Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting laboratory tests in various departments such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role includes all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, encompassing quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency assessments, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, this position involves clerical duties, general tasks, and phlebotomy responsibilities essential for the laboratory's daily operations. The technician also manages the provision of blood products as required by healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:


• Upholds the standards of the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Ensures the embodiment of the company's philosophy and core values in the service provided to clients.

• Specimen Collection and Management – collects blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; operates the pneumatic tube system; adheres to procedures for processing and testing specimens, including the use of various centrifuges; obtains other specified patient specimens as outlined in procedural manuals.

• Result Management – identifies errors or unlikely results and takes appropriate measures; reports critical values in accordance with Policy and Procedure; conducts tests within the designated timeframe; performs laboratory analyses in the following areas: Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank protocols, including crossmatching, antibody identification, and blood product dispensing; operates laboratory automated analyzers following established guidelines.

• Quality Control – conducts, evaluates, and documents quality control in compliance with Policy & Procedure, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; tracks and reports Performance Improvement metrics.

• Maintenance and Troubleshooting – performs routine and periodic preventative maintenance with documentation; addresses minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies/reagents; reviews policy & procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards those that are expired.

• Professional Development – takes initiative for personal and professional growth and ongoing education.

• Training – assists in the orientation and training of new staff and students in laboratory protocols.

• Compliance – adheres to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations.

• Safety Protocols – follows established safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous materials protocols.

• Laboratory Information Systems – utilizes LIS and HIS computer systems effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory findings.

• Competency Assessment – successfully completes annual competency evaluations by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

  • An Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience that meets the CLIA regulation requirements.
  • A) Completion of a U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course lasting at least 50 weeks and currently holding the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician);
  • OR
    B) 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including at least 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses,
  • OR 24 semester hours of science courses that encompass six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination;
  • AND
    C) Laboratory training that includes either completion of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS-approved organization (this training may be part of the 60 semester hours mentioned above), or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.
  • No prior experience is required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by NAACLS or other HHS-approved organizations.
  • OR Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, which must include a clinical rotation through the following laboratory sections: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years. (This meets the AMT MLT eligibility requirement)
  • Louisiana requires State Licensure.
  • New graduates who are Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
