Position Summary
What does a Personal Support Specialist do?
The Personal Support Specialist (PSS) plays a crucial role in delivering individualized services tailored to each person’s needs. This includes ensuring the execution of personalized service plans, goals, and desired outcomes in relation to both programmatic and community engagement activities. Furthermore, the Personal Support Specialist is primarily accountable for the holistic physical and emotional health of the individuals they support.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will be tasked with:
Under guidance, providing assistance and services that involve advocating for, motivating, instructing, and teaching individuals to express their personal preferences, ensuring their integration into the community, and aiding with personal hygiene, mobility, dining, dressing, and meal preparation. Encouraging individuals to engage in recreational activities; coaching them to enhance daily living skills; and maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. Collaborating with colleagues to implement and document care plans and, as per specific instructions, administering medication when necessary. This position can be physically demanding. Being prepared to respond effectively to ensure the health and safety of individuals during emergencies. Participating in team meetings, training sessions, and workshops as required for professional development. Engaging in external training and workshops as directed by your supervisor or program management. Maintaining certifications in *AMAP, CPR, First Aid, and SCIP as required. *Note: Failure to maintain AMAP certification may affect employment status. Being capable of standing for extended periods, bending, stretching, and lifting individuals who are bedridden or have limited mobility. Promoting and supporting the inclusion of individuals in their communities based on their unique needs, interests, and aspirations. Modeling and encouraging interactions between individuals and community members. Assisting individuals in forming and sustaining friendships with neighbors, colleagues, and peers. Aiding in the transportation of individuals or assisting them in utilizing public transportation. Qualifications
What We Are Looking For
You would be an ideal candidate if you possess:
A high school diploma, GED, CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant certification), or a Direct Support Professional (DSP) certificate from an accredited institution. At least one year of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities is preferred. Strong written, verbal communication, and mathematical skills. A valid NYS driver’s license is preferred but not mandatory. A flexible work schedule.Benefits
