The Role

The Senior Sheriff's Records Specialist classification is responsible for executing intricate and specialized clerical support functions within law enforcement. This role may involve supervisory responsibilities, including but not limited to the management of criminal records, warrants, civil processes, and the processing of inmate bookings. The specific duties may vary based on the requirements of the division to which the individual is assigned.

Key Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of:
  • Training methodologies and delegation of tasks to junior staff.
  • Customer service strategies for managing interactions with individuals in challenging situations.
  • Advanced clerical, legal, and law enforcement record-keeping practices.
  • Legal terminology and law enforcement jargon.
  • California laws regarding civil and criminal record management, including relevant codes and regulations.
  • Legal forms and documentation.
  • Proper English grammar and usage.
  • Basic arithmetic and accounting skills for handling financial transactions.
Ability to:
  • Provide leadership and guidance to team members; plan, assign, and assess work to meet deadlines.
  • Train and develop staff.
  • Work autonomously and execute tasks with minimal oversight.
  • Comprehend, articulate, and apply complex legal and law enforcement terminology and procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Typing proficiency of at least 25 net words per minute from clear text.

Experience:

One year in the role of Sheriff's Records Specialist (Level II) within Sacramento County service, or two years in records management within a law enforcement or judicial environment.

Special Requirements:

Background checks are mandatory, and candidates must be prepared to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays. The role may involve working in environments with inmate contact.

Probationary Period:

The probationary duration for this position is six months.
