QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least one of the following: (a) Certificate of completion of a certified auto mechanic's apprenticeship (b) Minimum of eight years' experience as an auto or truck mechanic (c) Six years' experience as a mechanic helper in a school bus shop
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License and be insurable for vehicle operation
  • Possess or obtain a minimum of a Class B COL with "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus) endorsements within the first six months after employment
  • Become certified with the State Department of Education as a mechanic in the area of general bus maintenance within six months after employment
  • Need to have an updated physical on file during hire. This can be a DOT physical or the Alabama School Bus Driver Physical Examination Report
JOB GOAL:

To provide support in the evaluation, upkeep, and repair of school buses and auxiliary vehicles.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Complete work orders efficiently
  • Analyze and diagnose issues with diesel and gasoline engines
  • Remove engines from school buses as necessary
  • Install engines in school buses
  • Change engine oil and filters in school buses and support vehicles
  • Change transmission oil and filters in school buses and support vehicles
  • Inspect and replace brakes and drums/rotors on school buses and support vehicles as scheduled or when needed
  • Replace tires on school buses when scheduled or as required
  • Complete written reports accurately
  • Perform emergency maintenance as needed
  • Maintain and account for assigned equipment
  • Be able to lift, climb, drive, and operate power tools
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Duty Days: 240

Salary Range: According to Madison County Schools Salary Schedule. Actual salary will be determined by rank and experience. Current employees with questions regarding step placement on the salary schedule should contact the Personnel Department.
