Position Title: Senior Educator (English Learning Center)

Our Saviour's Community Services (OSCS) is dedicated to providing dignified shelter and housing for single adults, along with essential educational programs for adult English language learners in the Phillips Community of South Minneapolis. The English Learning Center (ELC), a program under OSCS, collaborates with the Minneapolis Public Schools Adult Basic Education Consortium. We serve approximately 300 adult learners annually, offering complimentary classes in English, citizenship, conversation, and additional subjects.

Role Summary

The Senior Educator is tasked with designing educational programs and mentoring volunteer instructors to guarantee that ELC students receive exceptional instruction, enabling them to reach their educational objectives while feeling acknowledged, supported, and understood. Candidates for this role should possess a valid teaching license (preferably ABE or ESL).

This part-time, non-exempt position requires a commitment of 20 hours per week, with a flexible schedule spanning morning and evening shifts from Monday to Thursday. The role involves on-site teaching for in-person classes, with occasional hybrid arrangements for online instruction, allowing some discretion in work location. Regular hours will be expected at designated times, and the Senior Educator will report directly to the ELC Program Director.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver instruction or assist in classes while providing tutoring support as necessary.
  • Develop, adapt, and curate educational materials for the classroom.
  • Request, maintain, and create essential teaching resources, including lesson plans that are accessible to volunteers both on-site and online.
  • Ensure that the curriculum aligns with federal College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) and any pertinent state ABE ESL standards, catering to the diverse needs of all students.
  • Conduct periodic observations of volunteer instructors during classes and provide individualized feedback and support.
  • Address any issues promptly and fairly, escalating to the Program Director when necessary.
  • Offer ongoing training and support to volunteers regarding best practices, curriculum updates, and program changes.
  • Engage in training sessions, meetings, and conferences related to adult basic education, volunteer development, immigrant and refugee matters, community needs, teaching methodologies, curriculum design, and equity.
  • Collaborate with ELC and OSCS staff on organization-wide projects and daily operational needs.
  • Actively contribute to fostering a culture of belonging within OSCS.
  • Undertake additional projects and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Experience and Educational Requirements

  • Valid Minnesota Teaching License, preferably ABE or ESL.
  • Supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Experience in teaching adult English language learners is preferred.
  • Multilingual abilities are a plus.

Job Type: Part-time, non-exempt

Compensation: [$24 - $26] per hour
