Position Overview:

The role involves delivering comprehensive user assistance and technical expertise for the 8.3.1 and associated beamlines at the Advanced Light Source. This position necessitates professional engineering support as part of academic instructional laboratories and research initiatives. Key engineering responsibilities encompass the design, assembly, and evaluation of experimental systems, management of analytical apparatus, establishment of performance benchmarks, and thorough documentation.

The individual will serve as the primary point of contact for user support at the ALS beamline. Responsibilities include personalized training for users, initiating operations at the start of each shift, routine calibration and upkeep of equipment, and documenting optimal procedures. The role also entails the design and fabrication of innovative equipment, testing and refining new technologies, and developing effective protocols for their application. Notable projects may include automated sample de-icing systems, robotic unpacking mechanisms, in-situ tray screening goniometers, and integrating this technology with the BLU-ICE control framework. The individual will actively contribute to enhancing the research endeavors of UCSF scientists and visiting researchers, optimizing beamline performance to align with project requirements.

Salary Information: The final compensation and offer details are subject to further approvals in accordance with UC policy. Your placement within the salary range will depend on various factors, including your professional experience and internal equity within this position classification. For union-represented roles, salary placement will adhere to the collective bargaining agreement guidelines. The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Overview:

UCSF's research success is significantly attributed to its strong culture of collaboration. Although beamline 8.3.1 is situated adjacent to the particle accelerator at Lawrence Berkeley Lab, the X-ray diffraction facility has been a central hub for collaborative scientific inquiry for over two decades. It has acted as a repository of knowledge and expertise to fulfill the molecular imaging requirements of not only UCSF researchers but also the broader UC system and external investigators seeking access. The incumbent is responsible for upholding this tradition of excellence.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with high vacuum systems, electrical and high voltage systems, computer controls, and sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, along with user support experience in a cutting-edge scientific research environment.
  • Proficient understanding of physics and chemistry, as well as experimental methodologies at the Master's Degree level (or equivalent professional-level knowledge and experience).
  • Experience in implementing R&D projects, demonstrating effective collaboration and positive working relationships with scientists and technical support personnel.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills sufficient to document beamline operations for scientific users and to present and summarize R&D project outcomes.
  • Exceptional creativity, originality, and advanced technical expertise in engineering or scientific principles related to physics, chemistry, and engineering.
  • In-depth knowledge of planning, development, and fabrication of engineering systems.
  • Advanced understanding of specialized design work and the broader field.
  • Strong creativity and problem-solving skills to apply principles and practices within the discipline to tackle complex assignments.
  • Robust project management skills necessary to oversee the achievement of research objectives.
  • Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey intricate information clearly and concisely.
  • Advanced interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, assess complex challenges, and propose effective solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possession of a CA Driver's License may be required for after-hours user support.
