Job Summary

As a key member of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) research team, we are seeking a highly skilled Beamline Engineer to provide expert support for the 8.3.1 and beamlines at the Advanced Light Source. This is a full-time position that requires a strong background in engineering and technical support, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide multifunctional user support and technical assistance to scientists and researchers
  • Design, construct, test, and operate experimental systems, analytical systems, and other equipment
  • Establish performance specifications and document procedures
  • Develop and implement new equipment and apparatus, and optimize their performance
  • Collaborate with researchers to advance their projects and optimize beamline performance
  • Contribute to the development of best-practices procedures and documentation
Requirements
  • Advanced degree in a related field, or equivalent experience and training
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with high vacuum systems, electrical and high voltage systems, computer controls, and sophisticated physical laboratory instrumentation
  • Knowledge of physics and chemistry at the Master's Degree level, or equivalent professional-level knowledge and experience
  • Experience implementing R&D projects, with a proven ability to interact effectively with scientists and technical support staff
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to document details of beamline operation and present results of R&D projects
  • Exceptional creativity, originality, and technical expertise in engineering or scientific principles and practices
