The Engineering Division at LBL is seeking a Precision Measurement Specialist to join the survey and alignment team within the engineering metrology group. In this position, you will be responsible for executing routine survey measurements and meticulous alignments of scientific apparatus, including particle accelerators and photon beamlines. Furthermore, you will perform ground penetrating radar (GPR) assessments of structures to facilitate seismic anchoring. You will operate under the mentorship of a senior technician or team lead.

Key Responsibilities:

Precision Measurement Specialist Level 1:

  • Conducting facility and machinery surveys utilizing laser trackers, laser scanners, GPR technology, and optical instruments.
  • Executing survey analysis, design, and fiducialization with general oversight.
  • Aligning components of accelerators and beamlines within specified tolerances.
  • Documenting survey projects and measurement data electronically for future reference and distribution.
  • Ensuring effective and precise data acquisition and analysis to reduce operational downtime and expedite new initiatives.
  • Collaborating with engineering personnel, physicists, scientists, and external stakeholders to fulfill survey and alignment objectives.
  • Assessing, calibrating, and maintaining survey instruments and associated software.
Additional Duties as Required:
  • Performing basic engineering design using 3D CAD modeling, generating fabrication drawings, and coordinating with fabrication teams.
  • Operating and programming stationary coordinate measurement machines.
  • Troubleshooting communication issues between console computers and measurement instruments.
Qualifications:

Precision Measurement Specialist Level 1:
  • 1-2 years of relevant Mechanical Technician experience.
  • High school diploma with strong mathematical skills (geometry, trigonometry, basic calculus, statistics).
  • Proficiency in CAD software and 3D visualization of geometric systems.
  • Understanding of mechanical systems and precision alignment mechanisms.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to quickly learn new instrument technologies.
  • Strong documentation and data management capabilities.
  • Ability to interpret technical specifications and develop operational instructions.
  • Physical capability to lift 50 lbs, navigate stairs, and access various workspaces.
For Level 2 Candidates:
  • 2-4 years of relevant Mechanical Technician experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in CAD software and 3D visualization of geometric systems.
  • Experience with laser tracking technology.
  • Knowledge of precision survey and alignment methodologies, analysis, and computations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in accelerator survey and alignment or a related discipline.
  • Familiarity with console computer and robotic instrument communications.
  • Proficiency with Spatial Analyzer or similar data acquisition and analysis software.
  • Knowledge of computer-based survey data acquisition systems and robotic survey instruments.
  • Proficient in Creo Parametric.
Additional Information:
  • This is a full-time career position, classified as non-exempt (hourly paid).
  • The role is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Compensation will be determined based on qualifications and experience, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
  • This position may require a background check.
