About the Role

The Director of Major and Leadership Gifts at the John F. Kennedy Center, Inc. is a key member of the Washington National Opera's Advancement team, reporting to the Managing Director of Advancement. This role requires a strategic and collaborative approach to building relationships with major donors, Trustees, and other stakeholders to secure significant contributions to the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee a portfolio of high-level donors and Trustees, managing their philanthropic engagement and stewardship.
  • Create opportunities to secure undesignated funds and designated gifts from major donors.
  • Collaborate with other fundraising teams to deepen relationships and identify opportunities for cross-selling.
  • Provide leadership and coaching to the team, aligning priorities to meet revenue and goals, and delegating tasks to ensure a high-performing team.
  • Manage and develop the team's best practices in fundraising, including written and verbal communications, prospect research, proposals, meetings, events, and donor engagement.
  • Steward the portfolio through all major events and cultivate relationships with Trustees and major donors.
  • Work with the Managing Director of Advancement to implement and evaluate long-term goals and strategies for the team.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or applicable professional experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years in development, with a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory capacity managing development team members.
  • Experience managing a high-performing team that met or exceeded goals, through effective goal setting, prioritization, delegation, and team-building.
  • Ability to collaborate across a matrixed organization to leverage the expertise of other departments and achieve shared goals.
  • Knowledge and training in fundraising principles, development trends, and non-profit management or Board engagement.
