Clinical Laboratory Support Specialist

The Clinical Laboratory Support Specialist is a vital member of the Keck Medicine of USC team, responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our laboratory services. As a key support specialist, you will be responsible for procuring blood samples from patients, preserving the integrity of specimens, and transporting, processing, and preparing all samples for testing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Obtain blood sample specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods in response to requests from clinicians, taking into account the age of the patient.
- Receive and screen specimens for acceptability according to established guidelines.
- Deliver blood products to Surgery and transport surgical specimens to the appropriate laboratory sections.
- Process, distribute, or package all specimens received (excluding Anatomic Pathology samples).
- Handle inquiries regarding lab results, specimen status, and general information about the Department and its functions.
- Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with patients, colleagues, and guests, considering the age of the patient.
- Adhere to established Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures.
- Perform additional clinical and clerical duties as needed to meet Departmental requirements.
- Maintain professional growth and development, actively participating in the Department's Quality Improvement program.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Specialized/technical training: Graduate from an accredited Phlebotomy Program.
- 1 year of experience in Phlebotomy (preferably in an acute care facility setting).
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Required Licenses/Certifications:
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician - CPT (CA DPH).
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City). If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date (Required within LA City only).
