Job Title: Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant: CSICU

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our team in the Cardiac Surgery ICU department at the University of Maryland Medical System.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to the development of clinical pathways and quality improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Clinical Responsibilities:
    • Collaborate with attending physicians to provide day-to-day organizational and clinical direction to the healthcare provider team.
    • Perform comprehensive history and physical assessments for patients admitted to the service.
    • Order, obtain, and interpret diagnostic tests.
    • Establish medical diagnoses based on history, assessment, and diagnostic findings.
    • Design, order, and document treatment plans, including prescriptions of medications.
    • Initiate protocols and clinical pathways, evaluate the plan of care, and ensure timely intervention.
    • Perform invasive procedures.
    • Collaborate with attendings and residents regarding admission, discharge, and transfer decisions.
    • Present patients on rounds.
    • Communicate the plan of care with appropriate providers, patients, and family members.
  2. Education Responsibilities:
    • Provide formal and informal educational programs for other members of the healthcare team.
    • Participate in mentoring activities, precept students, and promote understanding of disease processes.
    • Function as a clinical resource for other team members.
    • Provide community education, health promotion, and outreach.
  3. Clinical Leadership/Outcomes:
    • Coordinate adequate nurse practitioner coverage on the service.
    • Work with physician leaders and hospital administration to achieve service-specific outcome targets.
    • Participate in performance improvement activities to improve clinical outcomes and minimize variation.
    • Develop clinical pathways and participate in quality assurance activities.
Requirements:
  1. Master of Science degree with completion of an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.
  2. Registered and currently recorded with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses and Certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland.
  3. CPR required.
  4. ACLS/BCLS as required for inpatient work.
  5. A minimum of one year experience as a Registered Nurse is required.
  6. Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in area of specialty.
Working Conditions:
  1. Weekend, shift work, holiday, on-call, and overtime may be required.
  2. There is potential for regular exposure to patients possessing infectious diseases in the work environment; requires observance of "Universal Precautions" by wearing gloves, goggles, and mask.
