Job Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified Elementary Education Specialist to join our team at Springfield Public Schools. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students with Autism.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Teaching and Instruction: Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at times designated, planning a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  2. Classroom Environment: Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  3. Curriculum Development: Guide the learning process toward the achievement of established district curriculum goals, establishing and communicating clear objectives to the students for all lessons, units, and projects.
  4. Preparation and Planning: Prepare for classes assigned, and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor as required by the teachers contract.
  5. Instructional Techniques: Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs of capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  6. Assessment and Progress Monitoring: Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, providing progress reports as required, and communicating with parents as deemed necessary.
  7. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  8. Student Support: Diagnose the learning challenges of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
  9. Classroom Management: Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities, following the SPS code of conduct for the classroom.
  10. Paraprofessional Supervision: Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals, and make written evaluations as required.
  11. Professional Development: Maintain an ongoing program of professional growth that satisfies district requirements but also satisfies personal expectations as a professional.
  12. Collaboration and Communication: Attend building and district meetings to promote communication and mutual decision making among the staff, contributing to the decisions made by the district and building regarding budget, facilities, curriculum, and personal well-being.
Qualifications
  1. Highly Qualified Teacher: Highly qualified with required competency in the content area, and appropriate content/program area educator license (Teacher of Students with Severe or Moderate Disabilities) and grade level (PreK-8) licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  2. Education and Licensure: Bachelors degree with appropriate license, or Masters Degree with appropriate content area license preferred and/or expected within 5 years.
