Summary Objective

The primary aim of this role is to support litter collection and field operations, assisting the sanitation supervisor, managing vehicle operations, and executing skilled tasks involving litter collection and illegal dumping vehicles across designated routes. This position operates under close to general supervision following established procedures while determining the timing and method for task completion.

Essential Functions

The essential functions below represent the majority of the responsibilities associated with this role. Additional tasks may be assigned as necessary.
  • Collects litter from various locations, including city streets and recreational areas.
  • Empties waste and recycling bins at public facilities.
  • Delivers collected waste to designated disposal sites as required.
  • Conducts thorough pre/post trip inspections of all operational vehicles and documents findings for maintenance purposes.
  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicles throughout the workday.
  • Performs routine maintenance and servicing of equipment using hand and power tools.
  • Transports personnel, materials, and equipment as needed.
  • Operates a variety of collection vehicles, including Solid Waste and Recycling trucks.
  • Assists the sanitation supervisor in managing illegal dumping incidents.
  • Provides support to Solid Waste/Recycling Supervisors as assigned.
  • Acts as a helper for front-end and rear-load collection trucks as necessary.
  • Handles the collection and disposal of deceased animals from public areas when required.
  • Records daily activities and completes all related tasks as assigned.
  • Identifies and reports unsafe conditions or practices that may lead to accidents or injuries.
  • Additional duties may be assigned at any time with or without notice.
Typical Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment and light-duty collection vehicles, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Valid Florida CDL, Class B preferred with a satisfactory driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with the geography of the city and the litter collection routes.
  • Skill in navigating traffic and operational hazards.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with colleagues and interact positively with the public.
  • Proficiency in operating light-duty equipment and machinery.
Physical Demands:
Physical demands involve regular walking, standing, and lifting between 20 and 50 pounds.
Work Environment:
Exposure to various environmental conditions, including bright/dim light, extreme temperatures, and noise levels.
Work Hours:
Standard hours are Monday to Friday, with potential requirements for nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
