POSITION SUMMARY:

The Possible Zone (TPZ), a nonprofit organization, is in search of a Creative Lab Education Specialist to enhance the functionality of TPZ's four classroom Design Labs. The successful candidate will possess a robust background in maker education and a commitment to bridging the opportunity gap. This role requires on-site presence at our Innovation Center in Boston, with a full-time commitment of five days per week.

CORE FUNCTIONS:

At The Possible Zone, we integrate making, design thinking, and STEAM education into our entrepreneurship and social enterprise initiatives. The Creative Lab Education Specialist will act as the primary steward and in-house authority for our Design Labs, ensuring proper maintenance, adherence to safety standards, tutorial creation, troubleshooting, and training. These labs are primarily utilized by our entrepreneurship students and their instructors as they conceptualize and create product prototypes tailored to their interests. Each lab is outfitted with advanced desktop fabrication tools, including a Glowforge laser cutter, Nomad 3 milling machine, Cricut vinyl cutter, sewing machines, desktop fume hood, laptops, and iPads, alongside shared access to direct-to-garment printers and a 3D printer farm. The primary design software employed includes Adobe Illustrator for 2D projects and TinkerCAD for 3D modeling.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as a dedicated caretaker for TPZ's Design Lab tools and resources, overseeing maintenance schedules and coordinating with manufacturers for repairs.
  • Establish and enforce safety protocols for all equipment, including hand tools and digital fabrication machines.
  • Collaborate with fellow technicians and program teams to develop interdisciplinary projects and curricula.
  • Provide direct assistance to students and educators during classes and workshops.
  • Create comprehensive documentation, tutorials, and training materials for the effective use of Design Lab equipment.
  • Work with the Fab Lab Manager to develop training and certification programs for equipment usage.
  • Consult with students and educators on design and fabrication techniques.
  • Supervise and mentor student assistants and teaching aides.
  • Manage inventory, maintenance logs, and equipment check-in/check-out processes.
  • Conduct workshops and classes for staff, students, and community members in collaboration with the STEAM team.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with digital fabrication tools and design software.
  • Experience in teaching or mentoring within a makerspace setting.
  • Familiarity with creative technologies beyond the Design Lab, such as coding, electronics, and large-format printing.
  • Proficient in quickly learning new technologies and software.
  • Able to engage with a diverse audience of varying skill levels.
  • Exhibit a creative mindset and collaborative spirit.
  • Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills in a dynamic environment.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Adobe Illustrator and TinkerCAD.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Passionate about the mission and vision of TPZ.
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole is a plus.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Salary range: $65,000, commensurate with experience.

TPZ offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, mental health resources, commuting stipends, 401(k) contributions, paid parental leave, generous paid time off, and opportunities for professional development.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION:

TPZ is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all team members and students can thrive. We recognize the importance of diverse perspectives and experiences in achieving our mission.
