This position presents a remarkable opportunity for a skilled and adaptable theater professional and educator to make a significant impact within an innovative and acclaimed arts organization dedicated to transforming lives in our community.

Under the guidance of the CATA Program Directors, the Theater Arts Educator is responsible for designing and delivering theater workshops tailored for CATA artists with developmental and intellectual disabilities, autism, and brain injuries. These workshops take place in various settings, including CATA studios, special education classrooms, day programs, and partner organizations across Berkshire and Columbia counties. Participants will engage in activities such as acting, creative storytelling, theater games, physical theater, devising, improvisation, and more, with opportunities for advanced exploration of different theater forms and genres.

Utilize adaptive and inclusive methodologies to engage participants of varying abilities, encouraging exploration of acting and storytelling, experimentation with diverse theater-making techniques, and the joy of live performance.
  • As a faculty artist within our partner organizations, embody CATA's core values, demonstrating respect for partner staff and leaders. Maintain open communication with supervisors regarding successes and challenges, fostering strong relationships with program partners.
  • Develop educational curricula and assessment tools under supervisory guidance, identifying key learning outcomes through written materials. Tailor projects to meet the needs and interests of CATA artists, assist in the creation of adaptive tools, set clear workshop expectations, and evaluate progress through feedback from supervisors, CATA artists, and partners.
  • Engage in CATA performances, sharing events, and other activities as a co-leader or support role, modeling active participation for CATA artists.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, trainings, meetings, and faculty retreats, applying insights to enhance teaching practices. Embrace performance-based feedback from supervisors to drive personal and professional growth.
  • Mentor CATA artists with disabilities under the guidance of Program Directors, supporting their exploration of sound, lighting, set and costume design, and other theater-related roles. Collaborate with Program Directors to create curricula that empower CATA artists to assume leadership roles through co-teaching and expanded design responsibilities.
  • Complete additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Theater, Arts Education, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Active performing artist with a minimum of three years of teaching experience across diverse settings.
  • Proficient in teaching various theater arts, including acting, theater games, physical theater, devised theater, Shakespeare, and/or improvisation.
  • Strong time management and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with other artists and within an organizational framework, reporting to supervisors.
  • Capability to adapt learning experiences for individuals of all abilities and ages, fostering a sense of belonging and demonstrating empathy, sensitivity, and inclusivity.
  • Experience engaging with diverse populations, demonstrating cultural competence, and committing to ongoing learning in areas such as racial and social justice and disability rights. Candidates with training in Universal Design for Learning, trauma-informed teaching, and DEI are preferred.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel throughout Berkshire County, MA, and Columbia County, NY, with mileage reimbursement.

  • Invitations to special events and programs.
  • Active engagement in a mission-driven organization with a positive and inclusive workplace culture that significantly impacts the community.
